of a man is really good fodder to do some good old fashioned religion bashing? Some of the replies - actually MOST of the replies in this thread are as disgusting as some of the things the far right religious NUTS would say.

THE MAN WAS SHOT TO DEATH FOR NO APPARENT REASON OTHER THAN HIS OCCUPATION!!!! That is not something progressives usually celebrate.

Please read that and then maybe point out to me where it comes anywhere NEAR using the word "miracle".

17. Any thick book is better than nothing
to slow down the velocity and stop or lessen the impact of a bullet. I've certainly read stories of cops, soldiers and crime victims saved by something in their pocket from a bullet wound; books(including bibles), notebooks, lighters, cell phones, etc.

Sloppy reporting as usual. We know the bible was hit by a bullet but good grief the pastor was probably holding it in reflex. And you don't "deflect" a bullet with it like a bullet bouncing off Superman. The bible at most absorbed some of the impact.

Things happened so fast I'm sure the eyewitnesses in the church are not sure of the exact events.

32. TR had 2 objects in his pocket
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 01:25 PM by RamboLiberal
Roosevelt was extremely lucky. He had the manuscript of a long, 50-page speech in his coat pocket, folded in two, and the bullet was no doubt slowed as it passed through it. He also had a steel spectacle case in his pocket, and the bullet traversed this, too, before entering Roosevelt's chest near the right nipple. Thus, one could say that Roosevelt's long-windedness and myopia saved his life!

http://www.doctorzebra.com/prez/z_x26a_g.htm

And I'd imagine perhaps a .38 revolver and the cartridges of the day may not have quite the penetrating power of a modern day defensive round.

BTW, interesting words of TR after the attempt.

Now, I would not speak to you insincerely within five minutes of being shot. I am telling you the literal truth when I say my concern is for many other things. It is not in the least for my own life….

I don’t know who the man was who shot me to-night…. He shot to kill me. He shot the bullet. I am just going to show you (Col. Roosevelt then unbuttoned coat and vest and showed his white shirt badly stained with blood)….

Now, I wish to say seriously to the speakers and newspapers representing the Republican and Democratic and Socialist Parties that they cannot, month in and month out, year in and year out, make the kind of slanderous, bitter, and malevolent assaults that they have made and not expect that brutal and violent characters, especially when the brutality is accompanied by a not too strong mind; they cannot expect that such natures will be unaffected by it….

Don’t you pity me. I am all right. I am all right, and you cannot escape listening to my speech either….

http://edgeofthewest.wordpress.com/2008/10/14/i-am-all-right-and-you-cannot-escape-listening-to-my-speech-either/

And from the end of this article - interesting point that applies today IMHO with all the hate being spewed against President Obama and Democrats and liberals.

Assume, as Roosevelt did, a population in which there are some weak-minded people, prone to violence. What makes such people fixate on a public figure? Roosevelt thought it could only be the language, bordering on incitement, with which it had become acceptable to attack public figures.

but it reminds me of a scene from "Support you Local Sheriff". When he receives his badge, the new sheriff notices a dent from a bullet and comments "Looks like this saved the life of whoever was wearing it." The mayor responds: "Yep, it probably would have if it weren't for all them other bullets flying in from every direction."

51. I was on a bus last year passing a public park and someone shot at our bus,
leaving a hug indentation in the window (but since it's bulletproof, it didn't shatter). I think about that all the time, and get kind of scared about walking about, which is weird, I suppose, but you read about people being killed by random gunfire all the time.
