What's your weather like? I'm clearly getting paid back
for bragging about our balmy January.

. Frost advisory in effect from 2 am to 9 am PDT Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a frost
advisory... The northerly winds are expected to decrease tonight.
The combination of light winds and clear skies will allow
temperatures to fall into the upper 20s to mid 30s in the valley
and Delta early Tuesday morning.

The frost may harm sensitive early Spring vegetation... such as
apricots... almonds... plums... and peaches.

:wtf:

Not a lot of snow but, in March? After about 5 years of not so much as a flake?

Weird. But, it beats a drought.

21. Hah! I've Seen Worse!
A silly story: I went to college at Cornell, where it seemed to *always* be snowing lightly - something to do with being right off of Cayuga Lake, I'm told.

Rob Reiner was filming "The Sure Thing" with John Cusack, and they need to do a shot in a "seriously schooly-looking" campus quad where it was snowing. They picked the Cornell Arts Quad because, statistically, of the schools with quads that fit the bill, Cornell was most likely to have snow on any given day. Sure enough, it snowed the first morning they were there. I got to be an extra (although I didn't make the final cut), but my friend and then-girlfriend (now wife) did make it into the movie. I invited John Cusack back to our fraternity for dinner and he reallyreally wanted to come, but whoever was "in loco parentis" (he was under 18 then) vetoed it.

The pretty weather down here only means that it's easier to see the faded "Bush-Cheney '04" bumper stickers on the back of Escalades.

It was so nice the other day, you could almost believe the leaves might spring out any day. now its cold for the rest of the week. it's cold and wet and supposed to be raining tomorrow. But i heard the geese coming back, which is always a good sign spring will be here soon. btw... i live in wny. At least we had that one nice day. i even went and washed my car!! oh, at least this crappy weather makes me appreciate spring all the more when it finally gets here.

so they're thinking it might not be a particularly fast race this year. You might have seen in one or another of my posts here that we're going out to Nome next week for the finish. We're arriving on Monday, which is Day 8 of the race, but I imagine it will probably be late Tuesday or Wednesday sometime before the first musher arrives. At the moment, Lance Mackey is leading - again. I took this photo yesterday at the restart out in Willow.

35. Yea, I remember from one of my other weather posts that you
said you were going.

Why do they call it the "restart"?

They didn't have to start over, right?

It just means to start anew, as in this year's race?

42. They call it the "restart" because
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 09:04 PM by Blue_In_AK
on Saturday they have the "ceremonial start" in Anchorage, which is all the teams do an 11-mile run here in town so everybody can get out to meet the mushers beforehand, take pictures, get autographs, etc. They also take "Iditariders" along for the ride. These are people who have participated in an auction for the privilege ... the money is used to support the Iditarod. Of course, getting a ride with Lance Mackey or Jeff King gets the highest bidders, but all the mushers take a rider.

Here's an Iditarider from Pennsylvania, who my husband met, riding with Tim Osmar. His wife saved for 15 years to buy him a ride for his birthday. I thought that was pretty sweet. :)

So, anyway, after the ceremonial start on Saturday, the dogs are all packed up and driven out to Willow where the real race starts on Sunday -- or "the restart."

36. This is some good news, although who knows how much
room there is.

The winter homeless shelter at Cal Expo will remain open through March, thanks to a grant from the Sierra Health Foundation.

Operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance, the shelter had been scheduled to close March 9. The $25,000 grant will allow it to stay open for a few more weeks, officials said.

The shelter houses up to 154 men, women and children each night during Sacramento's cold and wet winter months.

It offers clients a bed and two meals daily in a dormitory-style environment. Residents are allowed to stay for 14 consecutive days, with extensions granted in special cases.

The grant to Volunteers of America was among 42 grants from Sierra Health in response to the economic downturn and an increase in demand for basic needs.

29. Strangest weather I've seen since moving to the Portland area almost
15 years ago. Snowing like crazy when I went to work this morning and cold enough for it to stick somewhat. Then freezing rain/sleet. Then the sun came out for about 15 minutes and then it rained like crazy. Now, we've got a little bit of hail mixed with rain and fog. Basically, it's done a little of everything today.
