Son of DU poster critically injured
I'm not sure which forum this belongs in, so if it doesn't belong here, please forgive me and direct it to the right forum.

Last Sunday February 28th the 14 year old son of a DU poster was kayaking on a lake in Pierce County and was hit direct on by a powerboat. The boater who him, fled the scene of the accident and it took an undetermined time for a fisherman to find him floating face up in the water. By the time he was brought into the hospital his core temperature was 82 degrees. The signs have not been very good since then and he is still very critical in a Tacoma hospital.

I ask DU'ers to either pray or think positive thoughts for this young man who has already in his short life worked for progressive causes and I ask prayers and good thoughts for his mom that she has the suppport and strength to make it through this.

Peace

And I pray that his mom has the strength to withstand this horrifying situation...and its possibly unfortunate outcome.

I am terribly saddened...

I hope he recovers fit and well.

And I hope they catch the low-life that left him there. After all there's only so many places to dock a boat on a lake, and hopefully everyone's watching.

15. The person who hit the kid has been identified by police.
No arrest has been made. Or charges filed of yet.

Apparently it was an accident and the boater was unaware he had struck the kayak, given the circumstances.

54. Oh my! What a sad story!
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 08:10 PM by Generic Other
I just read the particulars in the Trib.

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/crime/story/643669.html

Then I read this follow-up story!

<snip>A Gig Harbor neurosurgeon accused of beating a man with a thermos in an alleged road rage attack told investigators he was upset because he’d been treating a teenage kayaker critically injured Sunday on American Lake.

Dennis J. Geyer, a Madigan Army Medical Center neurosurgeon, was arraigned Tuesday in connection with the incident Monday. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.

Court documents gave this account:

A van cut off Geyer, 37, while he was driving west over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Geyer followed the van for about 10 minutes to East Bay Drive Northwest and Wollochet Drive Northwest.

He got out of his car and knocked on the van’s window. The 60-year-old van driver later told deputies that he tried to apologize to Geyer, but said the doctor pulled him from the van and began hitting him.

A witness said Geyer hit the other man in the face with the man's thermos.

Geyer later denied using the thermos as a weapon, but the 13-inch-tall steel container was found at the scene with several dents in it.

Deputies arrived to find the van driver still at the scene. He had several cuts and chipped teeth and was taken to a local hospital.<snip>

95. You said it.
Motorboat strikes are horrible--someone slams into a swimmer or someone in a boat without a motor and disaster ensues, usually because the power boat was someplace it did not belong. I'll keep them in my prayers.

128. FYI to those who feel they want to do something.
According to one article I read, the parents have asked people to donate blood as a tribute to their son. “By donating blood, you will be helping someone else in need just as D.K. was fortunate in his time of need,” they said.

My hopes and thoughts are with the boy and his family at this time. I have a son about his age and cannot imagine the anguish.

136. Prayers and positive thoughts really do help
We got the call parents never want to get when our son was nearly killed in an assault in San Francisco. He was left for dead with multiple fractures including a severe spinal cord injury. I don't think there was a faith not represented in the many who prayed for him. Today, after years in a wheelchair, he is walking and getting ready to graduate from college. Faith, family and friends will get this young man through this.

This is so heartbreaking. What a complete nightmare.

It shouldn't be relevant, but he looks exactly like my son, so reading the story was like a punch in the gut. I will be praying very very hard for him.

I thought this was interesting--D.K.'s dad is praying for the man who hit him:
He did say he was praying for the man. "He's suffering, too," Hermansen said. "It was an accident." What generosity of spirit.

175. I pray that the young man
is getting the latest and the best medical possible care for this kind of head injury. There was a famous case of a woman, a pianist, brutally attacked with a brick on her head and by luck a great doctor(Iranian, I think) at New York-Cornell Hospital brought her back whole, the last I heard. This was over 10 years ago. I imagine this technique should be well known by now.

179. And maybe something can be set up to help the family? They will no doubt be facing enormous medical
debts with even the "best" insurance. And probably enormous legal bills.
