The dangers of NOT drinking
"THOSE who seek salvation in a bottle may have found their muse. Dr. Malcolm Lloyd, a Johns Hopkins and Dartmouth-trained physician and former pharmaceutical clinical researcher, will appear on "Good Morning America" this week to espouse the health benefits of daily drinking. "A lot of research shows that people who drink moderately flat-out live longer than those who don't," Lloyd tells Page Six. "From the prevention of the common cold to the pre- vention of the onset of Alzheimer's to preventing certain types of cancer, regular drinking can be very beneficial." Whereas most research has focused on wine, he says spirits can provide the same boon. Lloyd notes that "moderation" means one to two drinks a day for women and one to three drinks a day for men, and, "the positive effects start going in the other direction" once those numbers are exceeded."

I feel a lot better about my 2 glasses of wine each evening now!

2. This is old news
The latest I've read is that women probably shouldn't drink at all. Even one drink a day raises the risk of (breast?) cancer significantly.

So we men have to cover for them.

5. Three drinks a night is considered heavy drinking
and can conceivably cause a lot more trouble than it saves. Other studies have shown no benefits for women of daily alcohol intake.

However, a drink every evening before or with dinner is probably a good idea for men who can drink.

Don't shoot the messenger here. I'm a teetotaler by migraines, not by choice.

15. Not hogwash.
I believe it was the resveratrol in grapes that was the real health benefit of wine. You can eat more grapes/grape juice or supplement. I can't imagine what is good about drinking more than two drinks, ever, but I quit a long time ago. I might have 3 drinks in a year. Don't miss the hangovers, headaches, lost sleep, etc....Once it's really out of your system, you'd be amazed at how much clearly you can think, how much better you feel.

17. Tell that to those wine tasters.
Going from one place to another and walking down the road with a glass of wine. Rather akward. But at least they're not driving.

13. I decided 4 to 8 oz of vodka per night wasn't doing me too much good.
I'll be 6 months sober on Thursday. Kudos to those of you who can drink responsibly.
