Other than all that, in the eyes of the big shots, he is doing fine. The American people remain on his side, but he has to be careful that the gathering judgment of the Bigs doesn't trickle down to the rest of us.

As far as I am concerned, the bigs have the same sway as any other single voter, and the same sway as a writer of a piece.

This statement by Finemen is a direct statement that
1) there are a group of so called 'big shots' that have some sort of 'gathering judgment'
2) and the actions or thoughts of the 'bigs' might trickle down to a group he considers he is part of.(did he mean all Americans, or some middle group) If he is not 'careful', which sounds like at a minimum advice, and possibly warning from the reporter Fineman.

It seems like Fineman is laying out the info in a less then balanced method. Although I do understand President Obama has tough choices, I and am waiting to see how it plays out. And I think most Americans are also, even when the news isn't.
