Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, age 37, has been "a rising star" among Republicans for well over a year. At 25 he took over the state health department, which led to his appointment by President Bush to Health and Human Services in 2001. He was elected to Congress in 2004 and the governor's office in 2008. Last year many pundits predicted — and many Republicans hoped — that he would be John McCain's running mate.
No surprise, then, that the Republicans tapped him as their current frontman. Result, however, was stunning: Reviews have been all thumbs down, most harshly from conservatives who ridiculed him as "wooden," "weak," "an earnest dork." A Boston Globe editorial cartoon summed it up in six panels:
1 — My name is Bobby Jindal.
2 — I am a Republican.
3 — You used to like us.
4 — I want you to like us again.
5— That's why my sentences are short.
6 — We hope your memory is too.
