Democrat May Be Closing Gap In Special House Election
By Emily Cadei, CQ Staff
Republicans are growing uneasy about the special election race for Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand ’s vacant upstate New York House seat, and well they should. A new independent poll on the 20th District contest shows Democratic nominee Scott Murphy, a newcomer candidate, within striking distance of Republican Jim Tedisco, a state Assembly leader.
The better-known Tedisco leads Murphy by only 4 percentage points, 45 percent to 41 percent, with less than three weeks to go until the March 31 election, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted March 9-10. A Siena poll of likely voters conducted Feb. 18-19 showed Tedisco holding a 12-point lead.
Each poll had a statistical margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.
Tedisco’s campaign sought to play down the significance of the poll. “The campaign has said from the very beginning that this race will be a competitive, hard-fought contest,” communications director Joshua Fitzpatrick said in a statement, adding that Tedisco “is taking nothing for granted.”
The statement also characterized Murphy as having “no record of public service.”
The poll nonetheless suggests that Murphy has made significant inroads in name recognition and in attracting independent voters.
