Fun with the Freaky Fundie Lady at work.......
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 01:07 PM by marmar
We had a pot-luck buffet party at work today to celebrate a coworker's retirement. Afterward, when everyone was collecting their bowls, dishes et all, I complimented Freaky Fundie Lady (whom I limit my discussions with to very esoteric topics) on the oatmeal raisin cookies. She then says to me, "I'm surprised you'd eat cookies from a container from Wal-Mart. That seems too Red State America, conservative family values for you."(she said it with kind of a half smile - in an 'I'm joking but not really' kind of way)
I then picked up the plastic bowl, looked at the writing on the bottom and said, "Yep. Nothing says Red-State American values like 'Made in China.'"
She cracked another half-smile, took her bowl and went back to her desk.

Even would-be pleasant encounters with her have become unpleasant since the election.

4. Classic comeback!
You handled it very well!!! Congrats.

But isn't it ridiculous with people like that when you can't even have a simple one sentence conversation, without THEM making it political?

10. "without THEM making it political? "
ALWAYS!!! I go out of my way to avoid politics with her, but she can't help herself. I used to ask her how her daughter was doing, and her response would be, "Going to a re-education camp for children of conservatives."
I just don't even bother anymore.

7. Sad that she had to be political
on a non-political subject. But perhaps your response will make her think. Let's hope so.

12. Wal-Mart does have a dual sort of reputation
Red state values - if she means capitalism, unfettered- then hiring illegal aliens and importing China-made products may not bother her - it means lower prices, so as a consumer, she is OK with it.

And being made in China these days does not specifically mean designed and conceived of in China- a pure Chinese export to the US - it's a US product where only the physical manufacture takes place in China.
