So my repub. boss put up flyers at work that has me steamed
"Obama signed into law the LARGEST TAX HIKE IN HISTORY with the help of these congressmen..." asking people to voice their opinions over the tax hike, which if I'm not mistaken came with the stimulus package. I need help coming up with a counter that doesn't involve me losing said job. Any ideas?

When I'm a bit calmer, I can put down the exact text but it's done in such a "Polite yet passive-agressive" way that makes me throw up a bit in my mouth. I'm seething. It's ridiculous, just cause your old boy didn't win...

For those curious - it's a variety store - we sell tobacco. We've had tax hikes before without these flyers but now that *Obama* is in... grarg.

3. maybe you can explain to your boss
that since your boss already knows how much you make, that you are in the income bracket that gets a tax-hike, but you'll receive a tax break, and, you may be getting all your social security back (your boss will likely be paying more social security).

class war... the tables are turning.

and according to dead eye dick cheney "deficits do not matter, reagan proved it."

reagan was such a big spender that the largest federal building in Washington DC is named after him.

reagan - THE MESSIAH OF THE WACK JOB CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT IN AMERICA.

28. Reagan's was the largest peacetime increase...
According to a recent Treasury Department study, TEFRA alone raised taxes by almost 1 percent of the gross domestic product, making it the largest peacetime tax increase in American history. An increase of similar magnitude today would raise more than $100 billion per year.

In 1983, Reagan signed legislation raising the Social Security tax rate. This is a tax increase that lives with us still, since it initiated automatic increases in the taxable wage base. As a consequence, those with moderately high earnings see their payroll taxes rise every single year.

In 1984, Reagan signed another big tax increase in the Deficit Reduction Act. This raised taxes by $18 billion per year or 0.4 percent of GDP. A similar-sized tax increase today would be about $44 billion.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 raised taxes yet again. Even the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was designed to be revenue-neutral, contained a net tax increase in its first 2 years. And the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 raised taxes still more.

6. What tax hike?
The stimulus contained a massive tax CUT. And most of the pending "tax hike" isn't Obama's doing, it's the already scheduled expiration of the Bush cuts. He didn't sign one thing to make it happen.

What the hell is your idiot boss talking about exactly?

13. What was the increase on cigars ? Anybody know?
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 03:12 PM by Ellipsis
Some people I know own a cigar store and they were freakin' initially on the original proposed cigar increases.

2009 reauthorization includes taxes on loose tobacco and chewing tobacco as well.

Increase of tax on loose tobacco from $1.10/lb. to $24.78/lb.
Increase of tax on chewing tobacco from $0.195/lb. to $0.50/lb.

It is quite a hit for loose tobacco.

7. I'd say, "Tax hike? What tax hike? Not on me. I'm getting a tax cut.
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 03:05 PM by stopbush
"...and, you know what? It's about time I got a real tax cut. The rich have been getting their taxes cut by Rs for decades, and the rest of us are supposed to stand around and think it's just wonderful because that rich person's tax cut might, MIGHT trickle down to me. Well, it hasn't, and it's time for the rich people in this country to stand around and wait to see if the effect of the tax cuts to the lower classes trickle UP to them.

"If you don't like what I'm saying, tough. Better yet, I'll support your position on Obama's tax plan the day you raise my salary to the level that I will personally get a tax hike. Until then, it's about ME and MY family this time around - direct help to ME from MY president, not a lame promise that something MIGHT come my way when the wealthy finally tire of buying their 4th, 5th or 6th house.

"BTW - would you work for my salary? Be honest. If the answer is "no," then kindly take your sign down. It's offensive and elitist."

10. The ultimate spin doctor
This is straight from the Newt Gingrich book of political spin. It is not enough, when you are talking about the opposing party or philosophy, to point out that they raised taxes (in this case even though they didn't for most people) you have to maximize the effect by claiming it is the 'largest tax hike in history'. Newt's book also emphasizes that when ever you talk about your self you use superlatives and positive language like 'compassionate conservative' or the 'greatest president ever' (reagan?, bush I?, bush II? they said it about all of them at one point or another). When speaking about the otherside you always use the negative 'most liberal senator' (been used on Gore, Kerry and Obama), 'big time tax and spend Democrats'.

12. Write in the word "cigarette" between "largest" and "tax". At least then it's honest,
and is, actually, speaking the truth.

Can't fault a guy for speaking out when he's speaking the truth. With the "cigarette" in there, it's not specifically a lie, but it is a lie of omission meant to obfuscate and mislead (I think, anyway) on the part of your boss. A typical republican ploy, to leave out important words in the hopes of misleading the sheeple.

But, I think that in a tobacco shop, the boss has all right to put up signs letting people know that the biggest cigarette tax hike in history has just been enacted.

message to those buying cigs..."Don't shoot the messenger. Cigarettes now $6.00/pack." Many laughed and decided that now is the time to seriously consider stopping smoking.... This is in Palm Beach County, Florida.

14. The best revenge to serve a douche nozzle of a boss?
Put up a couple of small signs--at least one should be near the time clock--announcing a "Union Meeting" at a non-existent address.

It can be even more fun if someone is stationed at the aforementioned non-existent address with a camcorder.

My co-worker said something similar. Her husband told her that his beer is going up because of Obama's tax hike. Technically they are right but, like you said, they've never had an issue when the sin tax was raised in the past.

27. Ask how that could be,
since 95% of the population is getting a tax cut and only 5% is getting an increase...I'm thinking that 95% is a hell of a lot more people than 5%...so it would be a tax cut bill, not a tax increase bill...but then you know which % your boss falls into since he believes it's a tax increase...

29. The threads come so fast on here I almost forgot about it
First, that 'girl's' boss.... *cough*

Second - it's not just where customers could view them - they're in a giant pile for people to take. It's *meant* to incite the customers since *they* will feel the tax hike. But done so in a way to specifically incite against the Dem congressfolk here.

Third - oh the husband and wife are both repubs.

Thanks for the replies folks, still calculating how to handle this...
