Thugs storm Serb LGBT news conference
(Belgrade) A news conference by a Serbian LGBT rights group in Kragujevac, south of Belgrade, was disrupted by six unidentified men who smashed the plate glass front door of a cultural center and threatened reporters.

The Gay-Straight Alliance called the press conference to criticize the government for withdrawing a human rights bill that would have included gays and lesbians.

The group had planned on presenting a report showing widespread discrimination against Serbia’s LGBT population.

It is believed the thugs were members of an ultra-rightwing Serbian nationalist group which a week earlier threatened a GSA news conference in Belgrade.

GSA president said the disturbances prove the need for the human rights bill.

2. It's not religion - It's fascism
These fascist groups often have some sort of tie to the local religion... but their prejudices are based more off what they see as "undesirable" minorities, based on the challenge said minorities present to the status quo that the fascists want to impose. Sexual roles and breeding are usually top of the list as for what Fascists want.

It's not hatred of the LGBT Serbians driving this, it's the desire of these thugs to control the "regular" serbs. Targeting the homosexuals, the immigrants, the Muslims, whoever else isn't the majority, allows the thugs to threaten and frighten the majority, without ever having to harm said majority, and even win some support from them.

We have groups that do the same thing in the states. Round up the Mexicans, beat the crap out of the muslims, disenfranchise the gays, and you send the message to the white christian straights "this could be you, don't fuck with us" without ever doing anything that might actually put those WCS's on the defensive against you

3. I don't know why we get included
The other poster laid it out pretty closely, though I suspect we would disagree about immigration enforcement. But I really don't understand why gay people are included. Blacks, jews, and gays always seem to get limped in together and while I"m not saying, "Hey, I'm with you on the other two, but why me?" I do see a difference because the majority of gay people in any given country are of the majority group.

4. ... majority group?
"Gay" refers to someone's sexual orientation, so if I say I am gay, then I am a sexual minority, because *most* people are straight, even if I were white. Or Christian.

We also don't say that Jews are a majority because most are straight, or that Blacks are a majority because most are Christian.

5. of the racial or national majority is what I meant
I meant that in the US, most gay people are white people of protestant or catholic upbringing, most were raised in the middle class, etc... A person can be prejudiced against members of anothr race without being prejudiced against a member of his own family, but if he's prejudice against gay people, then he's against a member of his own family (immediate or extended) and certainly of his own culture.
