The Associated Press's Board of Governors - Where's Rupert Murdoch?
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 10:36 PM by Median Democrat
What happened to Rupert Murdoch?

I. Many American news organizations get their stories from the Associated Press:

/snip

The Associated Press (AP) is an American news agency. The AP is a cooperative owned by its contributing newspapers, radio and television stations in the United States, which both contribute stories to the AP and use material written by its staffers. Many newspapers and broadcasters outside the United States are AP subscribers, paying a fee to use AP material without being contributive members of the cooperative.

The decline of AP's traditional rival, United Press International, as a major American competitor in 1993 left the AP as the only nationally oriented news service based in the United States. Other English-language news services, such as Reuters and the English language service of Agence France-Presse, are based outside the United States.

II. Rupert Murdoch was named as a member of the AP's Board of Governors last year

WASHINGTON – Rupert Murdoch and Sam Zell, two media figures who led major newspaper acquisitions in recent months, are among four new members joining the board of directors of The Associated Press, it was announced Monday at the news cooperative's annual meeting.
In other results, four incumbent directors were re-elected to three-year terms. They are William Dean Singleton, who is vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group and chairman of the AP board; Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian and co-president of Rust Communications; Michael E. Reed, chief executive officer of GateHouse Media Inc., and Victor F. Ganzi, president and chief executive officer of Hearst Corp.

III. However, the AP's website does not list Rupert Murdoch as a Board member.

2. He wasn't appointed to a full term. A temporary fill in. From the article you linked to:
Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corp., was appointed by the board until the next election of directors to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Jay Smith, who announced earlier this month he was retiring as president of Cox Newspapers. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/business/20080414-0846-apboard.html
