3. Be Nice - Being Balanced Ain't Easy
The Times is trying to find a right-wing columnist so it can be "balanced", but finding a literate, honest, sane, and intelligent person on the Right is virtually impossible. IIRC, this is number attempt number three since Safire retired.

Other than a tragic lapse for a few years while Howell Raines ran the place, the Times has been very well behaved, IMHO.
