"it was a riveting half-hour, something almost completely unlike anything else ever seen on TV"
Cramer v. Stewart, in person

In the day leading up to Thursday night's face-to-face meeting between feuding cable hosts Jim Cramer and Jon Stewart, both men seemed to be trying to defuse tensions and downplay their very public spat. Stewart even told his audience on Wednesday that the interview, when it happened, was, "by all measure, bound to disappoint anyone that's been following."

He was wrong. What "Daily Show" viewers saw on Thursday night wasn't a boring love-in; it was a smackdown, or perhaps an homage to the human sacrifice scene from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" -- the one where they rip the victim's heart out and show it to him. At the very least, it was a riveting half-hour, something almost completely unlike anything else ever seen on television.

The clue that the interview wouldn't be rainbows and hugs came early on, when Stewart told his guest, "Look, we're both snake oil salesmen to a certain extent." Cramer, still eager to please, jumped in to say, "I'm not disagreei--" before being cut off by Stewart, who said, "But we do label the show as snake oil here." At this, the CNBC host visibly grimaced.

At points like that during the interview -- and there were many of them -- you almost had to feel sorry for Cramer. It was clear he'd come to the interview prepared to make nice, even desperate to. His voice was plaintive and cracking, his eyes were watery, he seemed willing and eager to agree with any and all of Stewart's criticisms in a futile effort to make the pain stop. Besides, just Wednesday night, the "Daily Show" host had been playing down the feud, and now here he was rolling numerous clips from a 2006 interview that shows Cramer discussing some unsavory practices from his hedge fund days, the kinds of things that could get the Securities and Exchange Commission involved.

And then, on the other hand, so much of the beating Stewart delivered felt deserved, especially when, towards the end, he started getting mad.

"I understand you want to make finance entertaining. But it's not a fucking game," he told Cramer. Then, referring to that video, he continued:

And I -- when I watch that, I get, I can't tell you how angry that makes me. Because what it says to me is that you all know. You all know what's going on. You can draw a straight line from those shenanigans to the stuff that was being pulled at Bear and at AIG and all this derivative market stuff that is this weird Wall Street side bet... Listen, you knew what the banks were doing and yet were touting it for months and months. The entire network was. And so now to pretend this was some crazy once-in-a-lifetime tsunami that no one could have seen coming is disingenuous at best and criminal at worst.

9. For those who haven't seen it yet (no spoilers, really)
all 3 segments were devoted to Cramer. Stewart wasn't a comedian. He very wisely did a straight interview spiked with exactly the right amount of outrage. He's what journalists used to be when they'd interview obvious thieves: skeptics who questioned every single blandly delivered lie.

He reminded me why I turned broadcast news off 5 years ago and have never felt like returning. He reminded me of what journalism used to be about before it was taken over by blowdried bobbleheads from the suburbs.

Don't expect to laugh during this half hour. There is nothing funny about what Cramer did to gullible people who thought he knew what he was talking about and was an honest guy instead of an enabler for crooks.

Stewart slaughtered him.

10. Sadly Stewart is one of the few good journalists out there
and he is a comedian. It shows to what depths journalism has fallen.
I would include Job Stewart with Moyers, Goodman, Olbermann, Maddow, Flanders.

26. Haven't some of the best political commentators been comics, or written
political pieces that were funny? (i.e. Lenny Bruce, George Carlin) Some of the best political and social discourse is/has been humorous.

18. His greatest weapon was that he was smart enough to understand the issue
and prepared himself to directly confront the guy he was interviewing. It was a sandbagging of the first order, richly deserved. Too bad "real" journalists no longer see getting at the truth as an important component of their jobs.

17. It was a great interview and he made the point that if more people with the microphone
called bullshit when they heard bullshit, we'd be better off very clearly.

They are all afraid of not getting the next interview that they don't really do the first one properly. Cramer told the truth when he said these guys were his "friends" and he believed them but maybe you shouldn't interview your friends then. He pointed out that he doesn't know how to analyze anything but just repeat what they told him because, well, they wouldn't lie to him would they?

He sucks and he came across as a kid in the principal's office last night just begging for special dispensation for skipping class.

19. I don't know...
We make such a big deal out of the "beat-downs," the "hammerings," and the "slaughters," of cable news pundits like Stewart, and I wonder why do we in the same breath marginalize people like the women of Code Pink? Stewart has everyone cheering for him, his audience on his side for every issue and laughing hysterically at every little look he gives, let alone what he says; it ain't exactly hard to lay down a "beatdown" in that atmosphere. Reminds me of the Dixie Chicks; did they say the right thing? Yes. Are they heroes for saying it overseas in a venue where everyone could agree with them and cheer them on? Maybe not. What about women like Sheehan, or Code Pink, who are constantly surrounded by adversaries and yet speak the truth, with actual consequences? Stewart's consequences are higher ratings.

20. Did you watch the interview?

AND...

Most of us do not marginalize the members of Code Pink, or Cindy Sheehan. It is just that the protests that go on every day are going on every day and therefore not new news.

Last night's "slaughter" was a one time event and therefore new news.

It was also a direct confrontation where Mr. Cramer agreed to come on Mr. Stewart's show to express his point of view. That viewpoint was proven to be lacking. Unlike Code Pink who tend to do things like get in the background of some cable TV news shots while wearing T-shirts with anti-war slogans.

27. I don't like Code Pink intruding
If they want to have a show and interview Jim Cramer that would be great. If Code Pink instead chose to break into the Comedy Network show and interfere with the program everybody tuned in to watch I'd curse Code Pink.

29. Non Violent Civil disobedience is the name of the game that code pink goes by : Ghandi, MLK etc, etc
And I feel they have every right to bring out that type of protest it is called free speech! They usually do it only to those that deserve it like Cheney, Bush even Pelosi since she did not allow Impeachment to proceed
