27. Kung Fu was developed many years ago and proven in combat
I studied the same martial art that Norris trained in originally in South Korea when he was in the Air Force in 1960.(Tang Soo Do). Norris previously had studied Judo. My Korean Master was one of the assistant instructors at Osan back when Norris was a student. When Norris came back to the United States he was quite successful on the karate tournament circuit circa the same era as Bill Wallace.

Norris was a martial arts legend long before he went to movies & then TV.

As far as I'm concerned while he's a RW idiot, he's still a very legitimate martial artist and black belt. He could've handled himself in a self defense situation.

48. Understanding the freeper portapotty references
Freepers, like anyone else, have to apply for permits to hold outdoor gatherings. The city always asks for an estimated crowd size, to determine if they've got enough portapotties. If they claim 10,000 people will come to a four-hour gathering, they're required to rent from 40 to 64 units, depending on which rental service's website you ask. (There's a Canadian site I found that calls for one unit per 50 people!)

After they rent 64 portapotties for the purported 10,000-freeper crowd, fifty freepers actually come to the event and they've got more than one toilet per attendee.

The city may have a point: freepers are so full of shit one of them can overflow a portapotty all by himself.

29. In a movie
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 10:41 AM by RamboLiberal
I'd have loved to see them go at it in real life. Norris was a legit martial artist. Lee never took his skill to the ring. I really can't say who would've won. Oh and having studied Tang Soo Do under a Korean master who was one of Norris instructors in Korea I can tell you tournament fights back then weren't playing paddy-cake. Protective equipment was almost non-existent. It was bare knuckle and bare foot mostly with more than light contact.

Chuck Norris's fight career lasted from 1964-1974. Norris started off by losing his first three tournaments but, by 1966, he was almost unbeatable. Among the numerous titles he won were The National Karate Championships (1966), All-Star Championships (1966), World Middleweight Karate Championship (1967), All-American Karate Championship (1967), Internationals (1968), World Professional Middleweight Karate Championship (defeating Louis Delgado on 24 November 1968), All-American Championship (1968), National Tournament of Champions (1968), American Tang Soo Championship, and the North American Karate Championship. Norris compiled a fight record of 65-5 with wins over champions Joe Lewis, Skipper Mullins, Arnold Urquidez, Ronald L. Marchini, Victor Moore, Louis Delgado, and Steve Sanders. Of the five men to beat Norris, three were Allen Steen, Joe Lewis, and Norris's last career defeat to Louis Delgado in 1968. Norris retired as undefeated Professional Full-Contact Middleweight Champion in 1974.

Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 10:50 AM by RamboLiberal
On November 24, 1968, he avenged his defeat to Delgado and by doing so won the Professional Middleweight Karate champion (non-contact) title, which he held for six consecutive years

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Norris

Oh and when they say non-contact - Hah. I was never at Norris level but I sure fought in "non-contact" matches - Non-contact my butt - I took the broken nose and some nasty bruises out of those rings. 60's/70's karate tournament fighting was no MMA bouts but they weren't paddy-cake either.

39. Korean martial arts are more than Tae Kwon Do
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 11:12 AM by RamboLiberal
Go look up Tang Soo Do, Hwrang Do, Kuk Sool Wan, etc. And this was in the late 50's early 60's when Korea was less than 10 years from the Korean War and less than 15 years from Japanese occupation.

What's your MA bonafides? Myself I have 27 years in Tang Soo Do.

I can say what an idiot Norris is with RW politics but I can still say the man was legit as a MA.

That is not hero worship!

IMHO Tae Kwon Do has watered down the martial arts of Korea. And I'm not saying Tang Soo Do is pure Korean. Not admitted by the Koreans but it owes much of its lineage to Okinawan/Japanese martial arts. But it was also effective and it was powerful in the hard martial arts category.

BTW - here's the man who was head instructor at Osan when Norris studied Tang Soo Do.

Grandmaster Jae C. Shin is the founder of the World Tang Soo Do Association, and is one of the leading figures of martial arts in the world today.

He was born in Korea in 1936, and began his long and distinguished career in martial arts at the age of twelve. During his childhood, an unknown monk initially inspired in him a strong desire to learn martial arts. Later, he joined Seoul Moo Duk Kwan central gym and began serious study under Grandmaster Hwang Kee, a founder of the Korean Moo Duk Kwan system.

By the time he was 1st Dan, he had already started his teaching career as an assistant instructor at the central gym. After that, he taught at Korean University, Seoul Central YMCA, various colleges, and many police and military institutions. His many years of teaching experience and his extreme dedication have added to his scientific and unique methods of teaching Tang Soo Do. His six fields of expertise include self-defense, forms, breaking, weapons, health care, and meditation. He has evolved these separate arts into one of the finest and most effective martial arts; The World Tang Soo Do system.

When he was recruited to the Korean Air Force in 1958, he had his first experience teaching American soldiers. After receiving his Master's degree in Political Science at Korea University, he came to the United States in order to extend his instruction of foreign students in 1968.

The year he came to the United States of America, Black Belt Magazine honored him for all time by devoting a full chapter to him in the book, "20th Century Warriors," putting him in the company of the most legendary martial arts figures ever. Grandmaster Shin, one of the most respected and well known masters in this century, is one of the few masters who has devoted his entire life to the traditional martial arts. In addition to insisting on disciplined, rigorous training and exacting techniques, he has always preached that the true value of martial arts training is in the application to everyday life. Teaching children is one of his favorite pastimes and he has become an expert in child development. His advice to his Black Belt instructors is good advice for teachers of all kinds, "When examining your abilities as an instructor, examine your young student's manners, attitudes, school reports and health conditions. Their improvements should mirror your own."

Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 11:23 AM by RamboLiberal
And they love to say that all their martial arts are native to Korea but then Tang Soo Do had Okinawan hyungs (katas). And I damn well know the lineage and history of the MA dating back to the A.D.

And my master instructor was an instructor in the Korean Tiger Division. The training back in the 70's with him was 2 1/2 hours of sweat, bruises and sometimes blood. You know that the ROK troops in Tiger, White Horse, etc are damn fine in hand to hand. And you know Korean instructors back then were no-nonsense!

I never had to prove myself in hand-to-hand thank goodness. But I trained like I might have to use it.

I can't go out and pick a damn fight to find out!

But defending Norris MA training and record is not hero worship! IMHO you are being a bit of a jerk in this thread!

It's popular and quite trendy to act the Martyr these days, and it makes for great ad copy.

I imagine a few of these demographics may even believe they really are being oppressed allowing them to better justify those base and visceral emotions, hate, and anger-- which require little though but act as a wonderful catalyst to better divide us, which then validates an even greater sense of Martyrdom.
