Sales of guns, ammo still high - Hoarding causing a shortage
Four months after the election of President Barack Obama, firearms and ammunition sales in Tulsa remain at a fever pitch.

Popular self-protection ammunition is often sold out at local stores, weapons are flying off shelves and the state reports an 87 percent increase in concealed carry permit applications for February 2008 over February 2009.

"People are hoarding. They're creating a shortage," Jim Prall at Sports World on 41st Street said of ammunition sales. "We've sold more ammunition in the last three months than we sold last year."

-----

Sales are so intense that Stone has limited sales of .380 ammo to one box per customer at Dong's. He has .380-caliber handguns for sale, and likes to be able to sell ammunition to whoever buys a gun, he said.

A shipment of 10 Ruger .380 LCP handguns was sold in 24 hours this week — seven the first day, three the next. "Last week I had 28 boxes of .380, rationed to one per person, and it was gone in three days," Stone said.

3. maybe, but not at every Wal-Mart in the country.
a lot of people are buying up all the "Winchester White Box" ammo (economy ammo for range/target practice) and then re-selling it at gun shows for profit. Perfectly legal, admirably entrepeneurial, blah blah. Pisses me off because I can't get ammo for a trip to the range. I called my local Wal-Mart a couple days ago and the gun counter guy enthusiastically tells me they got lots of 100rd boxes of 9mm winchester white box in. I went directly there when I got off work. In the hour since I'd called, some guy had come in and bought all 18 remaining boxes, at $20 a box. If I were to go to the next gun show in my town, I'm sure I'd see that same ammo for sale at $25 a box, or even more.

2. Why does everyone want to carry hidden weapons?

I remember when the concealed-carry permit law passed in Indiana. Suddenly everywhere I looked people were carrying guns on their hips. I, of course, felt it my duty to embarass said individuals by pointing out that open-carry was NEVER illegal. Doh.

8. From my more right leaning friends
Concerns over potential anti-gun legislation from the new administration, combined with collapse of civil society anxiety. (The latter due to economic woes.)

10. RW is spreading rumore that the Dems are gonna take your guns!
I can't tell you how many of those stupid emails I've gotten! I used to ask the sender why in the world they think that, but finally gave up. I'm just going to let them fret about it and spend all their money. Time will prove them WRONG!

6. All the firearms industry executives will back Obama in 2012
His election seems to have spurred more gun sales, based upon the unfounded and unrealistic notion that more guns will be banned or restricted. It won't happen because the votes aren't there in Congress and Obama seems uninterested in picking the fight.

So what better circumstances could the firearm companies have asked for? Fears of gun confiscation that won't materialize fuel gun sales and a stimulus to the industry.

7. They're waiting for the mass confiscation of firearms- which they were sure would happen
if/when Obama got elected. I say -let 'em spend lots of money on ammo they'll never need; it'll boost the economy (but not much).

Most people I knew took sensible precautions in case things went bad for a while after the clocks turned to "2000" like stocking up a week's worth of food, making sure they had fresh batteries on hand, and so forth. There were some folks, though, who hunkered down like it was the long-awaited signal for the War of All Against All, and they were determined they weren't going to go out in the first round. I reckon there's some folks even now who haven't quite finished off all the canned beans they were hoarding, and they still have a small bag of krugerrands stashed away.

It remains to be seen, however, if the lingering frustration over haven been taken in again doesn't cause more than a few folks to go completely off their nut. From what I can tell, some already have. The worrisome possibility is that some of the "saner" kooks might band together to force the action in a more concerted effort.

However, since they actually are stupid, they probably won't feel stupid.

12. Goddamn idiots like Glenn Beck, Chuck Norris and, really, everyone at Faux Snooze
For 8 years we lived under a defacto dictatorship, but now

because people are easily frightened by the "other", esp. a black president

they can easily panic the sheeple.

These idiots are really gathering steam for their New Civil War.

I'm glad I bought a gun and stocked up on ammo best as I can afford to

back in 2005, when the danger from our government was real.

I'm really worried now I'm gonna have to shoot a few of these fools.

I urge all liberals to arm in defense. We're gonna really need to now.

People fear social unrest and police protection cutbacks in the large cities. Tulsa? Not so much.

18. I'm down to 450 and it's hard to find more. I use at least 200 a week at the range.
I stalk Walmart for cheap Brazer 9mm @ $8.99 per 50 box. I'll even buy reloads when I can find them.

"Obama is going to amass an army of greenshirts who will take your guns and ammunition away just like Hitler did with his brownshirts.."

22. I was at Gander Mountain near Pittsburgh, PA - they are rationing
Limiting customers to 2 boxes. They were low on handgun ammo. Didn't check .223 for rifles since I don't shoot that.

I try to buy a box of 9mm like Winchester White box every pay since I shoot a lot in the warm months here in IDPA and USPSA matches.
