Peter B Collins Show to end - just announced on his show
Peter B is calling it quits. The funding is not there, the upside potential according to him is not there, and he cannot continue to afford to support the program out of his own pocket.

This is a tragedy.

Since the beginning of the year we have lost the voices of Randi, Rachel's afternoon AAR show, now Peter B. And with Malloy self-syndicating, I do have to worry about him too.

I don't know what to say, or where to turn. Tragic.

15. More than that, I can think of two things that truly set him apart
1) he was truly unscripted. He was well prepared, mind you, but he never read from a script. I enjoy some heavily scripted radio folks (rachel maddow would be a classic example of someone who had a very tight presentation), but Peter B always spoke from the heart, and it worked well.

2) he really interviewed people and gave them a chance to open up and present their own ideas without being constantly re-directed by the host to bolster the host's opinion.

2. this is a great loss to the progressive airwaves

I'm really bummed. I enjoy listening to him--he's right up there with Ron Reagan and Thom Hartmann IMHO. Will no one save us?

5. This is very fucked, maybe Limbaugh was right "liberal radio can't make it"
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 08:00 PM by GreenTea
Without a doubt corporations who finance republican right-wing shows want their republican host to say things like "less taxes for the corporations & the rich" and they certainly aren't going to finance progressives who speak out and say "corporations and the rich should pay their fair share"....and this goes for every issue, the game is indeed RIGGED as Brad of Bradblog.com just mentioned on Peter's show a few minutes ago....

The money for progressive radio just isn't there by corporate sponsors, they want right-wing republicans and that's we get hate radio 24/7 station after station border to border, coast to coast - 365 days. yet those corporate cocksucker use our, (the peoples) air waves for their trashy shows to promote their ideology...

And perhaps progressives don't listen, watch or care look how many people here who have access haven't even watch Rachel Maddow or Olbermann Why?

Peter B Collins is best I've ever heard on progressive radio (or ANY political talk radio) ...I'd then say Hartmann & Malloy come next....but no one, absolutely no one is as smooth and informed as the great Peter B Collins....bar none!

I'm truly going to miss you Peter, listening to you on my runs on the beach in Humboldt County (Samoa) each day....Hope you decide to come back again sometime...take care and good luck!

7. Damn. It looks like on-air progressive radio using the conventional model is all but dead now.
It's going to have to be the internet to save progressive radio using a new model tailored for it. Because I now think their's no way it can survive now using the current on-air model unless the rules concerning station ownership are reworked bigtime.

something from, rational, well tough out and had great callers.

14. For what it's worth, Brad F. mentioned he's supposedly in the running for Green960's 4-7 slot

And Peter B. said he'd support Brad if Brad were to be hired. Not that I think it's likely, but you never know.

13. WTF? Only ten replies to this, in DU's GD?
Other than one other new post in the "media" subgroup, this has been about it for discussion of Peter B.'s departure, and frankly I'm shocked.

Not so much that Peter B decided that it wasn't worth his resources to keep this show afloat--he was financing much of it, apparently, and there were never enough affiliate stations running his show for it to become self-sufficient.

But his was a truly remarkable radio program, and it sickens me a little bit that more DUers don't seem to care.

(or maybe they were just away from DU all weekend? I only heard about it this morning when listening to a friday podcast, myself.)

16. I hear ya. Seems that few care.
I'd be willing to help support his show, but it doesn't look like PBC would get much love from DU in general.

17. I had never seriously thought about contributing to an individual show before, frankly.
I've contributed to independent radio stations, and to NPR, for many years, but for some reason I've never coughed up bucks for podcasts, and maybe I'm part of the problem.

Anyway, I blame the apathy here at DU on two things:

1) Peter B. just flat-out never got the kind of opportunity to make himself known to enough people--he subbed sometimes for AAR hosts, but not that many people got to hear him over the air in his half-dozen or so stations.

2) Those that did hear him, I suspect, didn't get the kind of firebrand they might prefer (or perhaps I'm stereotyping DUers a bit here, but work with me). Tempermentally he's nothing like Randi or Malloy; nor is he quite so likely as a Thom Hartmann to repeat memes anywhere near as often in order to drive home a point.

The guy's just a great all-around talk show host, genuine and willing to host a lot of different types. We need more like him.

Tuesday morning is his last chance in case an angel or sufficient individual subscribers can help save this valuable and important voice.
