"We surround them" analyzed
OK, I have heard Glenn Beck do enough of his little half-arsed attempt at being Paul Revere, I figured it was time to analyze the "points" of his "we surround them" meme.

This is taken from their own website, followed by rebuttal.

According to the website, everyone who agrees with at least seven out of the nine points should go ahead and follow Glenn Beck. I shall prove that anybody who REALLY agrees with these points needs to fight beck and drive the GOP out of what power they have.

Point one: America is good, Yes or No.

My point, America, like every nation, has been good and bad. Contrary to what many on DU think, it does have some virtues that have made it stand out. We could NOT have a site like DU in many countries, and I don't just mean the usual whipping boys of China/Iran/insert country here. We as Americans have the right to speak out, to argue, to be outright unseemly and crude about matters we care passionately about. However, the source of that "goodness" is the one thing that Glenn Beck and his right wing people have been trying to kill, the idea that we, as a nation, can admit our faults, and work towards righting those wrongs. Martin Luther King once said "it is because I LOVE my nation that I criticize her, because I know she can do better." For the past eight years, anyone who dared criticize Bush was accused of hating America, the truth is, we realized that George Bush was HURTING OUR NATION, and that for all her faults, we loved our nation too much to allow the GOP to drive it into the ground. We were angry when Bush allowed his friends to let New Orleans sink, we were angry when we caught him LYING about WMD, we were angry about the fact that so many of our troops were used as pawns to make Dick Cheney RICH. It is because we think America is Good that we think she deserves far, far better than what Beck's GOp firends offer her!

Point Two:I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life, Yes or No
Many of the Founding Fathers, being deists, would need to answer that NO.

Point Three: I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday.
Beck, the main reason we are angry with the GOP is that they have been caught LYING, Lying about WMD, Lying about Torture, Lying about the Stock market, or spying on us domestically. If the GOP wanted to be more honest, they would need to finally admit all the LIES that have gotten people KILLED!

Point Four:
The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government.
Does this include beating children?, or filling their minds with hate? Does it include punishing single mothers, trying to starve their kids with underfunded food stamps and underfunded schools? How can the family remain scared when the father cannot find work, kids cannot afford medical insurance, the schools are a mess, the house is about to be lost, and at every step in the way, some company tries to put their foot in to make MORE money off of the suffering most families go through! How is THAT not the government messing with the family? Also, does this include same sex couples who in many case raise kids better than some churchy married folk?

Point Five:
If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.

Put Dick Cheney at the Hague, and I might believe you are serious. Hell, Whether it is Ollie North, Donald Rumsfeld, Ken Lay, there is one uniting factor whenever the GOP gets caught, nobody ever goes to jail. In the last eight years, a CIA agent named Valerie Plame was outed, and done so in a way where she could have easily ended up getting killed by the North Koreans (remember them, they are the ones who actually HAVE threatened to Nuke us?.) A cause of war was lied about, and several billion dollars of theft were lied about, as money that was supposed to be spent buying soldiers Body armor was been unaccounted for. Ah, but when Martha Stewart got caught cheating, Fox news all but demanded she be burnt at the stake!

Point Six:
I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results.

Rights are the other half of responsibilities. A lot of that "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as paid for by taxpayer dollars. The cops, the firemen/women, the paramedics, The construction workers that build your roads, and yes, those teachers without whom your children would not be able to pursue much happiness. Many of the things that allow for happiness, from the internet from the very system of networks Beck uses, were paid for by Uncle Sam. No, results may indeed vary, but we will not be able to get any results unless the

Point Seven:
I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.

You may "work hard", so do the people working 80 hour weeks. They do not get much of a choice who to share their money with, because insurance, debt and rising cost of living eats it all. And then, there are people that beck has that keep thinking taxes that hit the poor, like sales tax are the answer, all the while One percent of this nation has FORTY percent of the wealth! How can the ultra rich complain about paying taxes when they have most of the actual MONEY! And oh yes, Government CAN force you to be charitable, because unless you are in some private neverland where you have never benefited from government, you can be called upon to pay your share. People who make millions on the radio and TV have benefited from the fact the FCC organizes what would be a mess of networks that no decent sponsor would touch, so yes Glenn, you have gotten your fair share.

Point Eight:
It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion.

Then tell your admitted "friend" Ann Coulter to STFU the next time she wants to execute someone just because they disagree with the GOP!

1. Excellent job. I'm surprised that you could read content on Beck's website ...
since one would surmise that it's written in German. ;)
