7.5 out of 10 on the Weird-Shit-o-Meter
I know, this is sort of trite but:

What a weird coincidence: two epic films, and actually extraordinarily important ones: Michal Cimino's Heaven's Gate and 2001: A Space Odyssey are being shown simultaneously on two different cable networks. Now what I'm talking about is that both films use complete renditions of Strauss' The Blue Danube during extended sequences. I do not know of any other films in which this occurs.

I post this out of interest and boredom/ennui...

2. When 2001 came out I really really wanted to see it
but I happened to be sick with rheumatic fever and could not get out of be for 3 months, so .....

by the time I was able to get out of bed I had lost interest in it.

3. Oh no - you have never seen it?! Rent it - it is still very relevant if a bit dated.
Then rent 2010.

4. 2001 changed the way we looked
at film, at space, at the universe, at man's potential, and man's tools.

2010 changed the way we looked at Roy Scheider: the whole movie had narration which advanced the plot. Frighteningly bad version of a not-so-bad concept. Clarke's book was tolerably better than some of his other, later work

7. Yes. 2010 was a failure compared to 2001. But a worthwhile watch after 2001.
