9. Yep, that's when I bailed out..
If it's free, they don't need my credit card.

And, they have the worst TeeVee and radio ads ever! (Well...maybe Carl's Jr.'s are worse). :smoke:

6. to learn the TRUTH (not some crap from paid advertisements)... goto
Edited on Sat Mar-14-09 09:24 PM by ProgrezivIndie
the FTC website: http://www.ftc.gov/freereports here's what they say thereon:

What is AnnualCreditReport.com?

AnnualCreditReport.com is the ONLY authorized source to get your free annual credit report under federal law. The Fair Credit Reporting Act guarantees you access to a free credit report from each of the three nationwide reporting agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — every twelve months. The Federal Trade Commission has received complaints from consumers who thought they were ordering their free annual credit report, but instead paid hidden fees or agreed to unwanted services. Don’t be fooled by TV ads, email offers, or online search results. Go to the authorized source when you request your free report.

and here's the "OFFICIAL" website: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

All "free credit report DOT com" is really doing, is submitting such a request on your behalf... AFTER you've given them your personal information of course... and then they also try to sell you what are, in essence, "credit alert/watch" services... the same as any credit card typically offers... for a fee of course (typically $12/month) <[[edited to add the following>]] HELL. even the credit agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) offer the same "credit alert/watch" services (and again, each charges a fee)

15. This sort of begs the question: why isn't the FTC doing something about this?
Once upon a time, that was their job....

17. "why isn't the FTC doing something about this?"
Fair question.

I don't know the "scope" of what they are doing, or how many investigators/staffers they have at their disposal, or how many "complaints" they get daily/weekly/monthly on this and many others issues as well. Perhaps they lack the manpower (BUSH probably gutted their budget/staffing, like he did EPA and other regulatory agencies)?

At least they've put such a NOTICE (as I've quoted) on their website. Not much, I know, but it's a start. I would like to see TV/Radio ADs run at least once a week... from the FTC... telling people that https://www.annualcreditreport.com is the only "official / secure" website to goto for their annual *FREE* credit reports. Please note that it is https in their URL (and not simply http)

at risk of repeating... here's some more from ( http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt156.shtm ) the FTC website:

NOTE to DU Mods: the following info is PUBLIC DOMAIN, and can be found posted on the FTC's website:

Want a Free Annual Credit Report?

The Only Official Website is annualcreditreport.com

The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. The three companies have set up one central website, toll-free telephone number, and mailing address through which you can order your free credit report. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, wants you to know that, if you want to order your free annual credit report online, there is only one authorized website:annualcreditreport.com.

Many other websites claim to offer “free credit reports,” “free credit scores,” or “free credit monitoring.” But, be careful. These sites are not part of the official annual free credit report program. And in some cases, the “free” product comes with strings attached. For example, some sites sign you up for a supposedly “free” service that converts to one you have to pay for after a trial period ends. If you don’t cancel during the trial period, you may be agreeing to let the company start charging fees to your credit card.

These sites often look like the official site at annualcreditreport.com. Some use terms like “free report” in their names; others have website names that purposely misspell annualcreditreport.com in the hope that you will mistype the name of the official site. Some of these “imposter” sites direct you to other sites that try to sell you something or collect your personal information.

If you want to order your free annual credit report online, carefully type in the name: annualcreditreport.com, or go to the FTC’s website which has a link to it. Once you have filled out certain information at annualcreditreport.com, you will be directed to individual websites operated by the three nationwide consumer reporting companies. You may get offers to buy additional products or services while on the companies’ websites, such as credit scores or credit monitoring products, but you are not required to make a purchase to receive your free annual credit reports.

If you get an email or see a pop-up ad claiming it’s from annualcreditreport.com or any of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies, do not reply or click on any link in the message – it’s probably a scam. annualcreditreport.com will NEVER send you an email solicitation for your free annual credit report, use pop-up ads, or call you to ask for personal information. Forward any email that claims to be from annualcreditreport.com or any of three consumer reporting companies to the FTC’s database of deceptive spam at spam@uce.gov.

To order your report at annualcreditreport.com, you must provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. If you have moved in the last two years, you may have to give your previous address. To maintain the security of your file, each nationwide consumer reporting company also may ask you for information that only you would know, like the amount of your monthly mortgage payment. Each company may ask you for different information. That’s because the information each company has in your file may come from different sources.

You also can order your free report by calling toll-free, 1-877-322-8228, or by mailing a completed Annual Credit Report Request Form to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies directly. They only provide free annual credit reports through the website, phone number, and address above.

For more information about your rights to free credit reports, see the FTC publication, Your Access to Free Credit Reports.

The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters consumer complaints into the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database and investigative tool used by hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

18. THis company is esentially saturating the airwaves with false advertising
That sort of deal falls squarely within their jurisdiction- and the failure to take active measures (as opposed to making pasive disclosures on a website) only encourages others to engage in similar behavior.

11. I just checked my report there
You get your choice of the three major credit reporting companies, Keep track of which one you used, then go back again twice during the year for the others so you can space out your free reports. They do ask for information about your loans, prior addresses, etc. so they are positive it is you they are giving the information to. It's interesting--you can see what payments you made going back several years, who has requested your credit report, and more.

You have to buy another service (on a trial basis) before getting the "free" report.

13. the federally mandated site is annualcreditreport.com
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

even on that site you have to worry about signing up for fee based products.
But I know that you can get the basis credit report for free at annualcreditreport.com.
I've done it several years in a row.
