General Petraeus planning 2010 visit to Iowa
"THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that General Petraeus is planning on delivering the commencement address at the University of Iowa in 2010.”

So reports Michael Goldfarb, late of the McCain campaign, on the magazine’s blog.

Petraeus going to Iowa, a state he doesn’t have previous ties to, is going to create a huge amount of buzz about his presidential ambitions because the Iowa Caucuses kick off the whole presidential nomination process. If he does, deliver the address—and Petraeus must know this—it will be seen as a sign that he is thinking about running in 2012.

(snip)

Very little is known about Petraues’s politics and no one knows how he would make the transition from soldier to politician. But if he did enter the race, it would shake things up dramatically. He would instantly become a top tier candidate and the most serious threat to Obama's chances of winning a second term.

1. Petraeus would be hard pressed to even give Obama a fight
As for getting the GOP nomination, I don't even know about that. He might have some impact as an Independent candidate, possibly enough to make a difference one way or another. I doubt it though.

3. Hard to know if his Iowa gig is also a political profile gig but the guy
who should be most concerned here might be Romney.

If you're an Iowa Republican, and god help you if you are, do you go to the caucuses to support folksy Mike Huckabee, flirtatious Sarah Palin, ego-driven Romney, or this general guy?

5. Giving a speech is one thing, setting up a campaign apparatus
is another.

Also, how does he serve the C-in-C while plotting against him politically?

6. Petraeus' only hope is to run in 2016 as a Democrat, if he wants to be president
That sounds like crazy shit, and realistically it is, but David Petraeus has no hope of winning the Republican nomination. He's not Christian enough, he's going to take some of the blame for "losing" the war after the US pulls out of Iraq, and he doesn't fit into one of the two classes of people that make good Republican presidents: useful idiots like Reagan and Shrub who won't interfere with the evil fuckers who really run the country during Republican administrations, and truly evil fuckers like Poppy and Nixon.

8. Might be a good laugh
Who knows??

General Petraeus?? .....Universtiy of Iowa???

He might get his ass handed to him like Rove did when he tried to speak at the University...

I think the author is making a huge big stretch here. I think if he was running he could find a friendlier venue.
