GOP still believes there is a train from Disney to Vegas in the Stimulus
I didn't catch who the puke was on Meet the Press today but he repeated the lie once again about the mag-lev train from Disney to Las Vegas.

Personally, I think it would be great if there money for said train. It would mean jobs developing, building and running the train. The climate impact would be worth it alone, the number of cars it could reduce driving the I 15 from LA to Vegas. It would be a very attractive proposition, cut a 4 hour tip across the desert to 2 and not have to worry about the car overheating.

But back to my point, these pukes keep proclaiming there is a train in the stimulus but they have not shown anyone where it's at.

Worse yet, none of the media shut these fuckers off on this out right lie.

1. It's too bad there's not. Would be an excellent poster-child for high speed transit.

13. Yep. It wouldn't just be Disney to Vegas.
The corridor between LA and Vegas does have a decent amount of traffic, and passenger rail service, especially high-speed service, would be genuinely useful.

Though IIRC, the stimulus bill gets the ball rolling for high-speed rail projects in a bunch of different areas of the country.

14. It's a lot of traffic, very high profile, should be easy to get business on-board....
And the distance is about perfect (too long for car, too short for plane).

6. There has been one from L A to Vegas in the
planning for years. A high speed. They have even bought cars for it, I think, and have people on the payroll.
However, the blm objects, as does a number of environmental groups who don't want the run through the desert, which is the only way to Las Vegas from SoCal.
There used to be such a train, but not high speed.
You can still take the Amtrak from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, but the 'train' has rubber wheels, that is, it is a bus.

that the dumber-than-dirt Repubs are still whining about that simply doesn't exist in the Stim bill.

15. I support high speed rail everywhere
I read an article today about a magnetic levitation rail system going from Detroit-to-Lansing. It's not just a LA-Vegas line that's being proposed...the GOP just figured it would be the easiest to criticize. The GOP will be the party of NO, regardless of what is proposed. I think we need to fund these types of transportation projects across the country.

But the GOP and their oil lobby would stop it cold.

16. I wonder if they ever drive I-15 themselves, or if they always fly.
If they drove I-15 across the Mojave often (I do, to visit relatives.), they might like the idea of rail from Southern California to Vegas. Personally, I think it would be wonderful.

24. No kidding, That drive in July or August is steamy
We used to fly to Las Vegas because flights were cheap. We would spend the evening and night there and drive to LA the next day.
At the end of the week drive back to Vegas to catch a flight.

Cheap air fare to Las Vegas left when they went family oriented. Cheap rooms did as well, now look at Las Vegas.

20. This is how the story originated
Not to blame the WaPo. Clearly the Republicons were already talking about it before this story appeared back in February. I doubt if the entire 8 Billion alloted for high speed rail would be more than a down payment on the project.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/12/AR2009021203502.html

The deal provides $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, for example, including money that could benefit a controversial proposal for a magnetic-levitation rail line between Disneyland, in California, and Las Vegas, a project favored by Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). The 311-mph train could make the trip from Sin City to Tomorrowland in less than two hours, according to backers.
-------

Money for high-speed rail ballooned during the stimulus debate, from nothing in the House bill to $2 billion in the Senate version and finally $8 billion in the conference report, which was put together by Reid and other Democratic leaders.

Reid spokesman Jon Summers said in a statement that the transportation secretary "will have complete flexibility as to which program he uses to allocate the funds," but he acknowledged that "the proposed Los Angeles-Las Vegas rail project would be eligible." Summers said the rail funding "was a major priority for President Obama, and Sen. Reid as a conferee supported it."

22. Personally, I loved the variation that had the train
going from Disneyland to the "Bunny Ranch".

Of course, there isn't a place in Nevada named the Bunny Ranch, but there is the Moonlight Bunny Ranch which is
near Sparks.

Sparks is 430 miles from Vegas. Only a couple of miles outside of Reno.

And there is a train project in the stimulus bill for Sparks, one favored by Harry Reid, only it
isn't near the MBR and it's a restoration of a small line for tourists, something like maybe 20 miles
in a loop. And Northern Nevada has needed more tourist options for a long time. This one would be
aimed at families. Tourism is big part of the draw to northern Nevada and ski season only lasts part of the
year.

Of course the repukes, in their standard operating procedure, conflate things and try to make sound as
"evil" as possible... going to have a Maglev train that goes from the gates of Disneyland straight to
a whorehouse in Las Vegas! Paid with YOUR TAX DOLLARS!!! Those GODLESS DEMOCRAT are at it AGAIN!!!

Conflating things that have nothing to do with each other, and pulling other things out of their fat white asses.

23. Don't waste time trying to divine what they actually "believe."
This train is a lie that is convenient for ridiculing the stimulus. Propagating it doesn't require belief.

27. Exactly!
They're also still spewing lies that ACORN is being funded in the stimulus bill, as well. It is also not the case. But unfortunately, they are also well aware that the more you repeat a lie, the more likely it is to become a "fact". See: "Al Gore says he invented the Internet." Lying is what the republicans do.

28. Yes, they lie to control the narrative...
...to suit their agenda. They know very well that a lie repeated often enough becomes the socially-accepted "truth", and they use this technique to great advantage. And they know they will not be called on it, making their job of catapulting the propaganda that much easier.

They have poisoned the well. It's just that they do not realize that they, too, are drinking from the poisoned well and they, too, will perish because of it (figuratively speaking for all of us -- I hope!).
