So, I Ripped My Supervisor a New Orifice Friday
Couldn't be helped. We were discussing having to print out a huge training manual when I reminded my coworker that we already have most of one printed out and that we probably should only print out the pages we need. At the end of it I said something like, "save a tree." Out of the blue, my supervisor utters the following: "Save a whale, harpoon a fat chick." WTF??????

At which point all the males in the room laughed uproariously. I'm yelling, "That is inappropriate!" The laughter continues. I let things calm a little, went over, sat in my chair and seethed. After about 5 minutes I told him, "That was an inappropriate comment! It was sexist and it has no place in a professional environment." He says, "But I wasn't talking about you!" (I'm over weight) I replied, "This has nothing to do with me -- it was a sexist joke and has no place in a professional environment."

He looked stunned. Has this asshole been living in a cave for the last 30 years or what? Not surprisingly, he's a fundie preacher in his off time.

Anyway, he did end up apologizing and said it would never happen again. I was going to keep it between him and I but, apparently, he voluntarily went to the big boss and told him what went down. I then felt compelled to write an incident report just to cover my ass. Of course, the whole time I'm writing this I know I'm writing my furlough, but what the hell. I've never been able to let shit like this go by. Anyway, the big boss came over and said that he had had a talk with him at which time I gave him the incident report. What the hell? It was nice work while it lasted . . .

7. This is a census job.
There IS no HR. There is already a 70% turnover rate -- either people leaving on their own or people getting fired. This area had a 200% response rate and the office jobs, where I'm at, are coveted positions. They know there are 100 people in line for that job as I'm in IT and even the people in the office want to be in IT. I've been around long enough to know that in those cases, the squeaky wheel gets the axe.

10. which State are you in? Retaliation for complaining is illegal ...

First I would recommend - a wait and watch policy - If the person is question is behaving well then you can let it pass. However,if there is no let up in his/ other co-worker behavior - then I would recommend talking to a Lawyer. You have a right not be subjected to a hostile work environment.

2. There are google ads for everything...
The one below is for "Gay Chubby Dating" with two hefty fellows. Wow. No wonder they make so much money.

17. Just from personal observation
about 75 percent of dating today -- gay or straight -- is "chubby" dating. Someone might as well make some money off of it.

3. God, I hate it when that happens
You really want to think this shit is behind us, but it isn't.

Ir reminds me of a few years ago when I was being groomed for a management position. We went into a meeting to discuss filling an opening in the office. We discussed a few resumes and finally, the big boss said, "I just don't want another woman in there. We've got enough goddamn screaming in the office as it is now."

I almost passed out. I couldn't believe what I was hearing -- and I let him know.

I was immediately "de-groomed" for the management position.

14. It was a while ago
About 20 years ago to be exact. (But I remember it like it was yesterday.)

I ended up quitting the job because he was such an asshole.

It was a large company and when I had my exit interview with HR, I told them why I was quitting and informed them that I was the 17th person in a row to leave this operation (not a very big one) without having another job to go to -- just to get away from this asshole.

They ended up making him a vice president.

18. This is a travesty of justice .. I am sure that asshole must be a Republican
and so must be everyone in the HR ...

There is no other explanation for this.

in the early '70's shit like that went on all the time and you had no choice but to take it but holy shit! In 2009? Are these dickheads EVER going to get a clue?

5. Good for you!!!!
Some folks think it's still 1961, and "Mad Men" is an accurate depiction of life today.

Good on you! Good on exactly what you did, including writing up your own version!! Good. You did everything right, including telling the story here.

They will walk on eggs around you now, and, because you wrote up the incident, your position there is more solid than it was before. You're not going to lose your job. Don't worry. And, always document incidents such as this one. You're certainly covering your ass and making the record.

You did the right thing, honey.

11. I'm sorry you had to go through that.
Unfortunately rather than getting rid of the sexist fundie supervisor HR would most likely treat you like a whistleblower. Funny how places love to cover things up instead of dealing with them.

15. That's my guess.
We have 8-week contracts and mine is up on 4/17 so my guess is that my contract won't be renewed. I'm not going to stress over it. $11.25 an hour AND they have me, a morning person, working nights, AND they were going to put me working weekends as well. I'll hustle something up somewhere else.

12. "he voluntarily went to the big boss ..."
He was making sure *his* version of events got out there first so as to discredit you. He sounds like a real slimeball.

13. You had every right to speak up
and that incident report might just save your ass. You gave him a way to save money and look good and he took a cheap shot at you for it.

Don't forget to include as many names as you can remember from that meeting as witnesses. Just don't expect any of the males to back you up.

Assholes like that never know what they're doing is offensive until we tell them. They never realize it's wrong unless management tells them.

It figures a preacher from a woman hating religious tradition would do that.

I guess he never read much of the New Testament.
