South Carolina county hits 23% unemployment
South Carolina county hits 23% unemployment

WIS
Published: March 16, 2009

New unemployment numbers show the jobless rate in South Carolina has jumped to 10.4 percent.

Allendale County came in last place with an unemployment rate of more than 23 percent.

Places like the former Mohawk Carpet plant in the Allendale County town of Ulmer have been sitting empty.

The shutdown wiped out 225 jobs.

It was a setback for Allendale County, but area leaders say it was a relatively rare setback, and certainly not enough to explain the county’s 23.4% unemployment rate.

4. Pssst....
It's a mostly black county and I believe it's in Jim Clyburn's district. If you had any hopes about Sanford giving them stimulus funds, that should pretty much rule it out....

5. As someone that lived in Walterboro...
not far from Allendale (the town, I don't know where the county line was), you can't go by those numbers. Most of the adults in that area simply did not want to work. It's not like even western South Carolina and most other places in the US where there is a culture of working. I knew quite a few guys that as far as they knew, no one in their entire family history had ever had a steady job. Outside of the cities like Charleston and Hilton Head most people in the low country of SC live very modestly and cheaply, which I admire. Looking at raw unemployment numbers for that area like you're doing is comparing apples to oranges. 23% there doesn't in any way compare to a 23% elsewhere.

Most of the adults in Allendale County DO work.

By the way, "greenkal": you're very, very transparent.

10. I lived there for 10yrs.
My mother taught music at 1 of the schools there. I dont know where you got that assumption. The cost of living in Walterboro is way less than here in the capitol, but most people I knew there worked or they were students like I was at the time.

What a fucking moron. Lets hold his feet to the fire, make him honor his words, and then let the S.C. voters tear him to shreads.
