RIP Seattle PI
Seattle mourns the last day of its venerable Post Intelligencer

As the presses roll for the last time on the town's 146-year-old paper, American print journalists are looking out for the first city to be left with no print news at all.

1. I'm still reeling from the Rocky Mountain News demise...
Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 03:55 PM by hlthe2b
While, I admittedly always resented their conservative slant, I still read it (along with the Denver Post). Since its demise it just seems like there is far less news, even in the DP--as though the pressure is off to compete, so who cares?

I know it is inevitable, but sad and NOT good for the "4th Estate."

4. 4th Estate
And, I'm glad I hung up my print reporter's hat 8 years ago, even though I still terribly miss it (but not the long hours and low pay - which is why I gave it up. Couldn't afford to feed my son.).

2. Seattle still has the Times
which leans right; I suspect a lot of PI subscribers will cancel their subscriptions to the Times that they got in place of the PI; anyone with a PI subscription was given a Times subscription instead.

It's pretty sad

5. Good God - that's offensive.
Clubing seals, using women's bodies to sell crap, putting down my region.

Geesch, I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10-foot pole, no matter what slant it is.

10. SATIRE!
Really, the Stranger is the best weekly local news around here.

I'm pretty sure the cover is protest. It's pointing out the hypocrisy of the fashion industry which supports this hunt.

The cover is commissioned artwork.

And here's the artists website.

9. RIP, indeed. I'm continually dismayed at the lack of reaction to these closings
I see on a site like DU.

The country will never be the same when the print media dies. And once it's gone, it's never coming back.

Investigative reporting and beat reporting will be replaced by innuendo, gossip and opinion.

Sad indeed....thank you Seattle PI and your reporters for all of your hard work over the years!

12. Bummer, they USED to be the more liberal paper didn't they?
The Timesa in that market was pro business from the 80's if I rercall. But the P-I seemed to make if longer with a more progressive side as well as big biz.

15. Reichert is the reich man for the job?
Reichert embraced Bush at Seattle visit when other candidates stereed clear.
Were they also against NAFTA?

Inslee seems great though.

20. And Senator Murray (D) WA
who was to speak at the Wa State Labor Convention and no-showed, sending only a tape of a -very telling- squishy statement about NAFTA. The PI was on board with the pro NAFTA pundits and seldom gave a voice to anti NAFTA people.

And they now find out what the fuck THAT feels like to the rest of us puswad working fool suckers!
:nopity:

There is no opposition party and only an ember of a formerly robust 4th estate.
