What about pay raise for members of Congress?
We no longer hear about this topic. The "idea" was that they really do not want to discuss this in public, so they have an automatic pay raise. OK, leave it there but add that such raise should be suspended when the country's GDP drops by more than a certain percent, or when it is down for more than four consecutive quarters, to be resumed when the economy is back.

After all, they are screaming at AIG and at Geithner, really performing to their constituents, so let them show some affinity withe their constituents who lost their jobs or who have seen reductions in their income.

1. MERIT PAY FOR CONGRESS
if they don't deliver on their campaign promises, no merit pay

2. Could be tricky
First, politics is the art of compromise. You hope to achieve things and then you realize that no one is going to go along with you. Mostly, as Obama sees now, conditions change and you have to adopt. I'd rather have a representative who is flexible enough to adapt, than a rigid one who will not.

3. of course it could be tricky
but whats the point of empty campaign promises other than to mislead the voting public.
Accountability should be part of any job.

6. I should have clarified, though
that there will always be issues on which one does not want his representative to compromise. And a measure of character, in my opinion, should be knowing when to offer a compromise and when to stand tough.

4. I thought Reid just put a freeze on pay raises last night?
Did I read that wrong?

5. You may be right. I have not followed this issue closely
except when we are talking about bonuses.

8. Frozen for 2010, but they still get the one from Dec for 2009. They
didn't seem all that concerned with the economy a couple of months ago when this one could have been stopped as well. Judges also got a pay raise because of an add-on by Reid to the auto bail out bill.
