‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Insurance’ / 11:41 a.m. Everyone is chuckling during the latest riff by Representative Gary Ackerman, Democrat of New York. He suggests, let’s put this credit-default swap stuff into a layperson’s terms, because not enough most congress members understood it a year ago. Have you ever heard of that product, “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter?” he asks.

By selling something with no money in your back pocket or wallet, and collecting a premium, you're selling something that can’t be called insurance because there’s no money to back it up, Mr. Ackerman quipped. “Because if they called it ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Insurance,’ maybe nobody would buy it. … It’s a funny joke I made up, but all of us who are laughing are crying and getting angry and enraged.”

He began his query by likening the credit-default swap business to a sinking raft with two men surrounded by sharks and high waves in a storm, and one sells the other insurance. It’s snake oil without the oil in the jar, he added. A lot of various scenarios here all of which lead us all to his pretty obvious point.

Add in the presence of Code Pink demonstrators and you have a day's entertainment as fulfilling as the music provided by the ship's orchestra as the Titanic slipped gracefully beneath the dark, icy waves.

We've been out looking at the stars and the neighbor's dogs were barking, so I started making howling noises off the front porch and I stirred up dogs around the neighborhood! :bounce:

Just bein' a shit to distract from reality for a little while. Cory was laughing really hard when I got the dogs up the street stirred. They were trying to howl, but it was rather pitiful. :rofl: I used to do that with the cocker that we had for years, and she would take a few tries and finally end up in a full howl. Mr. lefty would be on his knees listening (and laughing) to her 'cranking up'.

The bad news first. :(

Mom is back in the hospital with an infection, she went in late monday night. Her vitals are good and she's awake and attentive.

The good news is kinda anti-climactic, but anything good helps. I have the puter back and I'm listening to Mike for the first time in weeks. :)

I was asleep at 7 last night after a near sleepness night on monday.

I'll hang as long as I can, I'm still worn out.

NEWS

A lot of changes to report.

First, I want to thank you all for helping me keep this site running. I could not do it without your generous gifts.

Second, as many of you know, I was an employee of Nova M Radio Network for the last two-and-a-half years. Well, Nova M failed, and is being liquidated in bankruptcy court. There was an attempt to carry on its business with new company, but that failed after only two weeks.

This left all of us unemployed; Mike Malloy, Nancy Skinner, myself, and everybody else associated with Nova M.

Both Mike Malloy and Nancy Skinner have embarked on the very risky business of self-syndication, and I am helping both of them do this. To that end I have established temporary free archives of both shows here, and established a MP-3 stream which carries both shows when they are live. Both Mike and Nancy intend to establish their own paid archives in the near future to provide the revenue they need to stay on the air, and I will help them do this if I can, but the free archives will stop being added to as soon as that happens. See update, below.

Third, we are very sad to announce that Peter B. Collins announced that he is ending his self-syndicated show as of Friday, March 20th, 2009. His experience echoes that of most of us in Liberal Talk Radio; those people with the money just will not step up to the plate to help make Liberal Media happen. They prefer to wring their hands and worry that the Right Wing controls the media. They will spend a fortune on a private music festival, or on help for people in other countries, or for Inaugural Balls, but will they buy a few radio stations and employ Liberal talkers? Nope. Will they invest $60,000 to keep Peter B. Collins on the air for the next year? Nope. Will they give a grant to Head On Radio Network so that they can actually pay a minimal salary to the people who devote hours every day to bring that network to you?

Finally, some good news. Thom Hartmann has left the Air America Radio Network, and is now in the employ of Dial Global. As a consequence, I again have permission to present his archives and podcasts here. They should re-appear on this site within the next day or so (I am writing on Sunday, March 15th, 2009) and will be subject to a seven day embargo so as not to cannibalize podcast subscription sales which support Dial and which therefore support Thom's show. (Monday update - Last Monday's show has now been posted.)

Again, thanks to all of you who have helped out with your gifts to help keep this going. I literally could not do this without you.

After the Mike Malloy show goes to subscription service, probably at the beginning of April, the same situation will apply as with Thom Hartmann's archives; They will be podcast and archived for free, on a seven-day embargo.

Also, I will be adding the archives of Stephanie Miller and possibly also Bill Press on the same terms at some time in the near future. Details to follow as I know them.
