Principal in Providence bit, punched by mom, police say

Folks, it's not the teachers, nor the administrators, nor even NCLB, though all those could of course stand improvement--in some instances a lot of improvement. The problem with education is stuff like this. While this is an extreme example, it's by no means isolated. When you have parents who are involved and supportive of the educational process, you'll have kids who learn. When you have parents who are unsupportive and even hostile, you'll have kids who don't learn. It's as simple as that. Until more parents value education and instill that value in their kids, nothing anyone else does will help much. And no, I don't have any suggestions on how to get there from here.

2. Well said. I agree.
I suggest we go back to when the education system that worked better than it does now. Bright students get accelerated classes. And students who are not going to college get enrolled in trade school.
Unruly students get the paddle(only with parents consent), really consistently disruptive kids get kicked out of school so the rest of the kids can do the work they want to do.
Sound harsh? Worked better. I was there.

11. We have so few trades with demand to train for now. We're a nation that doesn't make anything
anymore. We import our carpenters and masonry craftsmen from poorer nations to our south, most of our manufacturing is dead or dying. The kids who don't go to college can't all be mechanics now can they?

By the way? What trade schools were the female students not destined to enter college enrolled in. I am more anxious to hear a response to this than any of the above.

16. Nursing, welding, and small engine repair.
At least that's the way it was when I was in school.I've also had a couple girlfriends who were mechanics.
You do have a good point about the trades though. Concrete work comes to mind as a trade that now is done almost exclusively by hispanics. And of course the car manufacturers are in real trouble.
I'm probably going to push my son toward heavy equipment operator. He hates school and he has an incredibly high mechanical aptitude. I know quite a few equipment operators and many of them are genuinely happy. Not too many people are happy doing their jobs no matter what the job is.

4. Oh the story is much better than this....
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 10:53 PM by Lost in CT
A female teacher tried to calm Uceta by speaking to her in Spanish, but Uceta punched the teacher in the face as well, police said.

School resource officers were called to the office, and they tried to remove Uceta from the building, but she resisted.

Uceta's extended family even got involved, surrounding her and the police officers who were trying to subdue her. During the melee, Uceta reportedly also bit an officer and hit at least one of them in the face. One patrolman got kicked by Uceta, and a pocket was ripped out of his police jacket.

Once handcuffed and in police custody, the report states, Uceta said, "I'm going to take your gun and shoot all of you."

And on a as seen on Seinfeld note....

Just a couple weeks ago, Roger Williams Middle School was also at the center of an incident where an assistant principal was accused of stomping a Dominican flag -- on the day the school was honoring the Dominican

5. Bullshit! Quit putting ALL the blame on the parents!
Administrators and teachers can be TOTAL ASSHOLES and more often then not in situations like this they deserve a tongue lashing if nothing else.

I am sick to death of all these rah rah teacher/school posts around here where all the blame is heaped on the parents.

Teachers and administrators need to HONESTLY shoulder their part of blame-whether it's all or part.

And before I get flames in reply, I am not anti teachers or schools, but I am really fed up with the extreme bias and finger pointing at parents that I have seen going on around here lately.

6. I'm not a teacher
but I come from a family of teachers. When you have to give door prizes to get parents to come to parent-teacher night, and even then fewer than half show up, you have a problem that the schools can't fix by themselves.

13. Either your post is fantastically dry humor or SOMEBODY HIT A NERVE
Let's see. You say admins and teachers are "total assholes far more often that not in situations like this"

From the story linked above - genius.
"Moseley repeatedly asked Uceta to lower her voice but she refused, the police said, and Uceta then punched the principal in the face. When Moseley pushed the mother away, her son struck him, according to the police report. Next, Uceta allegedly grabbed Moseley’s left arm and began biting him.

<snip>

When officers arrived, they attempted to escort Uceta out of the school but she continued to try to punch Moseley, the police said.

By then, a large crowd of Uceta’s family had gathered, making it difficult for the officers to take her into custody. During the struggle, Uceta bit a patrolman’s arm and struck a patrolman in the face, according to the police. She also kicked another police officer and ripped the pocket out of his jacket.

After Uceta was placed in custody she said, “I’m going to take your gun and shoot all of you,” according to the police report."

So WHO EXACTLY, based on the information we have, was behaving like a TOTAL ASSHOLE?
