There is a virtual ban on criticism of him in the press. Uncritical praise corrupts absolutely.

Jon Stewart’s recent attack on CNBC’s Jim Cramer was so brilliantly performed, so smoothly produced and cruelly compelling, almost nobody noticed that it didn’t make sense. The climax came as Stewart put up a number of grainy clips of Cramer describing how to artificially (and unethically) depress a company’s stock price. The video was damning. Cramer looked sweaty.

Stewart summed up the significance of what Cramer had said on the tape: “You can draw a straight line from those shenanigans to the stuff that was being pulled at Bear and at AIG, and all this derivative-market stuff,” he said sternly.

Except that you can’t draw any such line. In the video, Cramer hadn’t mentioned derivates or securitized loans or credit-default swaps, or any of the other exotic financial instruments that caused the fall of AIG and the current recession. There’s no evidence that Jim Cramer had anything to do with any of that, and Stewart didn’t offer any.

9. I'll give Tucker one thing

Stewart tends to go easier on elected officials than on his other guests. He excuses this by saying "it's a comedy show for god's sake" and that's definitely true. Having John Kerry and Barack Obama on the show certainly boosts the ratings and I'm sure they wouldn't come on the show so easily if Jon asked them tougher questions. But doing so, in a way, lets his show become a free commercial for the politicians.

But everybody has to pay the bills and I don't think Tucker Carlson is in any position to lecture Jon Stewart about selling out.

22. Apparently Carlson understands that he isn't all that relevant...

Personally, I found him annoying - even when he had the (very) rare good point. He claims to be (I forget - an Independent or Libertarian) and voted for McCain for some reason (if memory serves).

He lacks (in my opinion) any sense of likability but is profoundly adversarial - a deadly combination (which is why, I guess, he doesn't have a show anymore, thank goodness). If he was adversarial but at least marginally likable, he might not have been marginalized...

Then again, maybe I'm just injecting too much of my personal perspective in his absence, but, there you go.
