I want Geithner to stay at Treasury.
The repubics want him gone (they bleat).

Fuck them. That is the BEST reason for Obama to keep him. This may be a footnote or side show to the much larger issue of economic rescue/recovery, but it is also about *our* president standing up to loudmouth bullies.

Fuck

Them.

1. I think hes doing a good job
That bit about him telling Dodd to take out the bonus clause I think is an effort to make Geithner the sacrificial lamb. These are Clinton folks - the one thing they do (other than Steph) is loyalty.

Start the clock in September, when Henry Paulson, treasury secretary under the Bush White House, was charged with selling Congress on the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. As part of his pitch, Paulson, along with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, repeatedly insisted that executive compensation limits should be avoided, lest they hobble the effectiveness of the program.

“If we design it so it’s punitive and so institutions aren’t going to participate,” Paulson told Fox News at the time, “this won’t work the way we need it to work.”

3. The GOP doesn't care if he stays or goes, as long as it hurts Obama. nt

8. I don't want him to stay because of his connections but who in the world
could Obama put in there that doesn't have them? DC is a sewer. I just hope it works out for Obama and for us somehow.

6. Can you imagine anyone else who would even take that job right now?
You would have to be crazy. Blamed for everything by everyone. Get no credit for keeping the economy from nose diving even more. I can't imagine anyone willing to accept the position. Everyone seems to think they are now expert economists.

7. I do too. I still am not clear how he has got caught up in this mess after barely
two months in office, when the AIG catastrophe happened months and months ago.

I have watched nearly every testimony he has given and I trust this man. He's obviously overwhelmed but he knows his shit.

He's a million times better than Paulson, and I can't think of anybody more qualified.

How in the hell did this bonus thing end up in HIS lap? Of all people??

9. the fake outrage is disgusting
Geithner was middle of the road type pick who Republicans would approve of at Treasury. Anybody they would have come up with is waaaay worse. John Snow? Paulsen? McCain's top candidates that were most mentioned for the job were John Thain and Phil Gramm and you bet the GOP would have been all for them. What a joke.

11. He has understaffed.
Is it because he's a badass and does not need the help, or is he actually another Norquist-conservative who plans to show how government does not work by breaking government?

12. Perhaps being in the treasury will be an incentive to pay his taxes
on time - if someone reminds him they are due on April 15. Every year.

14. What republicans want is beneath consideration anyway
I wouldn't cling to Geithner just to spite the GOP.

While I disagree with his policies, and while I think he has gotten off to a poor start, that's no reason to sack him. What's needed is a change of policy direction, and that's only going to come from Obama. Unlike Geithner, Obama has started off very strong, but the clown circus that erupted this week was not impressive.

AIG? Oh, we didn't even know about that. Oh, wait, we did. We just found out about that Friday. But there was nothing we could do about it. No, really. We tried, but these guys whose jobs we saved, whose asses we own, they told us we had to give them the money. Contracts, you know. Dodd did it. Oh, wait, we knew about this a month ago, etcetera

Perhaps it's a really impressive economic team behind the scenes, but here's what they looked like this week:

It was pretty jarring to see how awful their communications are. Who knows what? What's on second? I don't know! I would like to be reassured that these people actually know what the hell they're doing.
