me I cannot locate who they are. Are these part of Bayh's group? Their names need to be remembered for down the road. I'm now going to C-SPAN and see if I can find the six "Nay" Dems..

1. I am not sure I agree with the tax
I am outraged they got the bonuses in the first place but I don't like the govt to come behind and after the fact do this. It sets a precedent and sooner or later the little guy will have it done to him. I don't think contracts should be broken like this both for the banks and the auto workers.

9. I don't get it..
how can you arbitrarily tax a hundred people, because you don't like the bonuses you signed a contract to give them a year ago?

11. I'm not at all sure the little guy is getting a multimillion dollar bonus
from their company using federal funds.

I don't have to worry for sure - I teach! Every Christmas, we get a mass (but very thoughtful) email from administration wishing us a very nice holiday!

Nope, no sarcasm tag; this is simply the truth. (Although in 1974, I did get a $25 bonus from Texas Commerce Bancshares. Their first and last.)

14. I guess it is the principle for me
It is like confiscating ones money. I have a girlfriend who got a 13,000 bonus this year who runs a surgical center. She is on call 24/7 and puts in 16 hour days on salary. She has a large family and is on a tight budget. Her husband works construction and there is no work here for him so she is the breadwinner. If the govt came behind and taxed her after the fact 90 percent she would be in big trouble financially. If the govt had given her small company some money she would be in the same place as the bankers who got outrageous amts of bonus. If contracts can be broken so easily then it can happen to small businesses too.

Same with the govt forcing the auto workers to renegotiate their contract. We give our three employees a whole paycheck extra as a bonus every Christmas. It shows our appreciation for the job they do. I would be pissed if the govt taxed them at 90 percent.

On the other hand millions in bonus is way more worth than anyone is worth in my book. If the banks knew they were going to need this money they should not have signed the bonus contracts. I don't know if I am explaining this well.

12. I think Treasury's initial objections were valid and prudent
Think of the news story that would happen if it went the other way. The bonuses would be denied; the employees would file suit. Joe Scarborough et al would be chortling about the the likelihood that we would lose the suit, have to pay the bonuses and possibly for their lawyers. Is there not something in the Constitution that says you can't pass laws after the fact? The auto workers at least opened negotiations, although they were backed into a wall. I think we would have had to get this degree of co-operation to make it work. And remember that the purpose is to get this job in that Department done and this b.s. is not going to help Liddy with his personnel requirements. These jobs which are essentially to work yourself out of a job are not that great a prize especially when deals made are not made...who's going to sign a contract to work there now? And he needs his people to trade EVERY DAY. You can't have a hiatus to hunt for staff. Liddy has to count on the good will of these people.I hp he can still swing it. This was the department that fucked up but these guys did not draw up the policy,...they are executors as Liddy explained very clearly. The designers are gone. THat is my understanding. I saw Liddy and to me he made sense and I could understand his judgment. What he did not do was allow the Congress to get political cover and they are mad about that more than about the decision itself.
