A Life Sentence for Shoplifting.... hmmm
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 02:22 PM by Still Sensible
For shoplifting two purses, an Oklahoma City woman was sentenced Friday to life in prison.

A judge imposed the unusually long term after learning the shoplifter is a heroin addict who has been punished almost 30 other times for theft-related crimes. The stealing dates to 1971, records show.

"It’s past time to say, ‘Enough is enough,’” Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said. "She needs to be warehoused for the rest of her life. She’s a one-person crime wave.”

In this case, it is certainly more about her being a career criminal than it is about the actual charges. A life sentence seems over the top, to be sure, but then again it is frustrating when dealing with such a record.

3. No, but there are certainly a number of Wall St types
for whom the life sentence would be appropriate.

6. If the judge did own a lot of stock
it would be nice to see some hedge fund managers and other Wall St thieves in his courtroom.

8. lol
something along the lines of 10 consecutive life sentences each would be appropriate.

9. My first thought also.

11. Or, shock-horror
Give her free, unadulterated heroin and clean needles so there is no need to steal.

10. Oh, it'll be reduced on appeal and you bet it will be appealed.
19 years in the can with mandatory substance abuse group sessions should be enough, finishing out her earlier sentence.

30 busts in 38 years means she's a career criminal. However, petty property crimes shouldn't ever warrant a life sentence, although finishing her last sentence just might be one.

I would much prefer to see all the corporate thieves doing life without parole. Their crimes were far from petty and hurt millions of us.
