CNN TV is reporting a FEDEX MD11 crashed during landing at Tokyo/Narita

Video from a surveillance camera shows the cargo plane bounce twice and roll hard to the left, bursting into flames. Footage showed the wreckage upside down as firefighters extinguished the flames.

The Montana crash was a single engine, Pilatus PC-12 like this one;

This is usually caused by a very hard landing and/or excessive landing speed.

Airlines have standards they go by as far as winds go. FedEx might have different standards since they don't carry passengers.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says 17 people are dead in a plane crash in Montana.

Spokesman Mike Fergus said the single engine turboprop plane departed on Sunday from California. The pilot had filed a flight plan showing a final destination of Bozeman, but canceled that plan at some point and headed for Butte, Fergus said. The plane crashed about 500 feet from the airport while attempting to land and caught fire.

Fergus said preliminary reports indicate the dead include numerous children. He said there were no known fatalities on the ground.

"We think that it was probably a ski trip for the kids," Fergus said.

Fergus said the plane was registered to Eagle Cap Leasing in Enterprise, Ore., but he didn't know who was operating the plane.

7. My cousin is a FEDEX MD-11 captain ..

He and I have talked at length about the 1997 FEDEX Newark MD-11 crash. This sounds a lot like Newark, from what little I know. The FEDEX MD-11 at Newark also flipped over after a hard landing, and exploded. Amazingly, the crew survived.

Now, I need to track down my cousin and make sure he is OK.
