BOYCOTTIN' Bishop to skip Notre Dame commencement over Obama
Bishop to skip Notre Dame commencement over Obama

Associated Press - March 24, 2009 3:23 PM ET

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The Roman Catholic bishop whose diocese includes the University of Notre Dame says he will boycott President Barack Obama's May 17 commencement speech at the Catholic school because of Obama's support for abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research.

Bishop John D'Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend said Tuesday that Obama's recent decision to federally fund embryonic stem-cell research brought the U.S. government for the first time "into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life."

Obama has said the policy will ease human suffering.

Notre Dame says it doesn't support all of Obama's positions but does not plan to rescind the invitation.

6. Yes, you can go.
But you will have to wear a heavy dress and a ridiculous hat.

26. He's entitled to free speech just like the rest of us...even if we don't like what he's saying..
What if the IRS did that to Martin Luther King, Jr.?

It would be awfully heavy handed - Nixonian in fact - for Obama to loose the IRS on this guy.

If he did that it would only turn this Bishop into a martyr - if Obama ignores it then the Bishop really doesn't matter.

MLK targeted Democrats and Republicans equally, without regard to party. The fetus worshipers ignore their own church's teachings on the death penalty, illegal war, treatment of the poor & prisoners and nearly everything else to support Republicans and target Democrats exclusively.

Reasonable people recognize & understand the difference.

If the RC Church wants to act like an arm of the Republican party then treat them like one - expose their donors, audit their books, limit the amount they can spend on political campaigns and make sure no funds come from foreign sources. If not, then they're arrogant scam artists selling snake oil and should be taxed as a business. Otherwise they should leave the politics to the politicians.

15. These hypocrites do not speak for the University
I have always been proud of my alma mater even when its over-hyped football fortunes lead to disappointment. I don’t remember it being an institution of intolerance and openly afraid to allow a dialogue with those who do not support its core dogma. Father Jenkins is standing firm in his support of the address by President Obama and my sense of the student body, from reading their viewpoints online, is that those who are able to think for themselves are thrilled to have the President on campus. Many of these trying to obstruct the Obama address feel that in calling themselves Catholics, they can speak for a university that they have no legitimate connection to. They are doing harm to the university by associating it with the hypocrisy of many Catholic conservatives. They had no problem with a president who pandered to their voting bloc at the expense of science, reason and the Constitution. For them, George Bush’s cynical defense of Catholic dogma and unborn Americans gave him a free pass to slaughter millions of non-Americans, born and unborn.

20. Petty move by the Bishop
but it is his choice.

As mentioned above, W got a free pass by the Catholic conservatives, they practically worshiped at his feet if he said the standard platitudes about abortion and gay marriage. The blinders need to come off, dialogue needs to be done but not with the current mindset. Since the sexual abuse scandals this institutional inability to process this pits them against the evil, scary world and they just get more and more entrenched to follow Rome 100% or else.

The only people this Bishop is looking at are other Bishops, ArchBishops, and Cardinals for a possible future promotion nearer to Rome.

24. The Double Standards Of Theocons
The Double Standards Of Theocons

So K-Lo is furious that Notre Dame has invited the president to speak at Commencement, because he's pro-choice. But it was fine for pro-choice, pro-death penalty Condi Rice, who was part of the team that signed off on torture, to speak at Boston College. Seriously who do these people think they're persuading any more?

28. Strange argument... some academics are now saying the BC isn't Notre Dame...
If CR spoke at Notre Dame and they didn't boycott her then THAT would be comparing apples to apples but the Bishop at Notre Dame really couldn't say he was boycotting Condi's speech at Boston College.. I mean who cares? He wasn't gonna be going anyways was he and it's not his school...
