More adults ruining it for the kids
This is a sad story happening in my small town.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/Poteet_board_sends_football_coach_packing.html

here we have a man who was a star athlete in high school and college. he was even drafted into the nfl. This is a big thing for our little town. We have a maniacal school board that fired him because board's president's wife wants her brother to get the job. What is wrong with adults. The kids were crying at school all day1

2. Small towns suck that way
I grew up in a small town, the one thing you learn is nepotism and favoritism live large.

4. Which is precisely why I hate the Republican notion of local control.
I want to scream at them: Have you EVER interacted with your locally controlled government? They're typically a bunch of nepotistic and sycophantic morons!

5. I live in a moderately size suburb and the city government has screwed me twice
When we purchase our house we were on the outer edge of town and had a septic tank.

The town exploded shortly after we moved in and a huge sub-division went in across the street. That meant that sewer came down our street. They put it on the opposite side of the street.

The city mandated that we connect up to the sewer and that we had to pay to bore under the road for the connection. That sucks, never heard of that before as it should have been brought to our property line.

So I swallowed hard and bucked up, got quotes and refinanced the house so I could pay for it. Got a contractor all lined up to do the work, then he wouldn't return my calls. I found out why after the contract expired.

Because I didn't use the construction company owned by one of the city council members they changed the ordinance for our property alone to require a special bore.

I ended up using their contractor and it cost me $5,000 more than what I had expected which I didn't have because when I refinanced I was using earlier estimates.

The second time was over a sidewalk they decided that I needed because one of the council members lived in the new subdivision down the street.

The smaller the government the more corrupt they are.

17. Pug control at any level doesn't work. That's why their party needs to go away.

6. Nepotism and favoritism live large in big cities too.
I think they get more noticed in small towns because everyone knows everyone else, so even if the media doesn't cover something, everyone still knows.

But in small towns, you can't avoid seeing the crap that goes on.

3. You know what's next?
The students get involved in the next trustee votes and the trustees are replaced.

9. Yeah, baby! Get those kids involved, let them work to bring change
and they learn a really valuable lesson most people seem to have missed.

11. That is what is happening. For sure 3 seats will be pro- students
but the other 4 (majority) still have another year. they run in staggered years.

this is making me so mad. i can't think straight. i should be studying for a calculus test, but this is taking up much of my time. Thanks for all who commented.

we've taken this up to the state board, school board members are the only elected officials who cannot be recalled. we want them to resign - we need support to make this happen
thanks again.

7. Someone on the board's brother-in-law needed a job.
Even before I read this "School board President Mike McIntyre denied Palmer was dismissed so that a relative of a trustee could get the job" part of the article, I figured that's what it was.

20. I figured it was either something like that, or he didn't share whatever 'religious values'
they have... I remember reading something like that happening at a school in Texas in regards to a teacher who was an atheist.

10. Off topic... but, stuff like this is the reason teacher unoins are so important.
Without teacher unions, the teaching faculty would become a political spoils system.

It's obvious in my small town that nepotism is the goal for the majority of our school board members. There isn't a member that doesn't have a relative that hasn't gotten a job or advanced their position in the school corp. since they were elected.

12. sometimes its the other way around
dont act like that never happens.

i know in my local community, children always seem to be the reason we arent allowed to have public proporty for us all to enjoy.

my community opened up a new nature reserve a couple of years ago with walking trails and all the out door goodies...
but of course, the young people just couldnt stand to have a place open to the public and out of sight of the authorities...

condoms, make shift beds, trash, spray painted signs and restrooms...

now the actions of a few kids cost the rest of us a great place to relax and spend time out doors.
the park has been closed as the authorities arent able to efficiently keep watch over it.

they finally arrested a group of kids that had been 'tagging' everything in the park. to little to late tho.

the vote was the men against the women. I guess because he was BOMC - big man on campus - and they were band guys guys growing up. I thought band camp would have made up for that- lol!

Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 01:15 PM by sammytko
on the boards at the paper and news websites. it would be very appreciative. i know you do not know me or Coach palmer, but the big picture is the destructive nature of the people in charge. This is something that we need to get away from. Thank you again for reading my post.
