Boston's ban on blunt wraps stands

Boston's ban on blunt wraps stands

By Stephen Smith, Globe Staff

A Suffolk Superior Court judge ruled today that Boston has the legal authority to ban blunt wraps, tobacco-based rolling papers, from all store shelves across the city. Blunt wrap makers had sued to overturn the prohibition, arguing that city regulators were unconstitutionally picking on them.

The February ban on blunts was part of a broader regulation strengthening Boston's tobacco control ordinances, giving the city some of the nation's toughest antismoking regulations. A key rule eliminates cigarette sales in pharmacies and in stores on college campuses, but allows other retailers to continue selling tobacco products -- except for blunt wraps.

Three major blunt wrap manufacturers -- as well as their trade organization, the RYO (as in, roll your own) Cigar Association -- sued the city, complaining that their products had been unfairly singled out for a comprehensive ban.

But city health leaders contended that blunt wraps presented a particular threat to the well-being of the young because they are sold in tempting fruity flavors and used almost exclusively for smoking marijuana.

1. Blunts are disgusting, but obviously I don't support a ban.
Just like I don't support a ban on glass pipes.

5. I remember along time ago...
I had an after school job at an Xtra mart

Every night the stoners would come in and buy up the blunts. They would go in the parking lot and empty the tobacco out and roll them with their weed.

The parking lot was always a mess at night

10. No, just do this
go to google news, type in the word ban or legislation.

Figure if people are passing laws we should keep an eye on them. They do work for us :)

6. I didn't know there was such a thing.
I thought you just bought a cheapo Phillies or Dutch Master and take out some or all of the tobacco.

7. WTF
http://www.rollingpaperwarehouse.com/index.asp?Category=203&PageAction=VIEWCATS

These things have fruity flavors? WTF is wrong with kids these days? Do they not actually like weed? Apple Martini, Peach, Mango? This is so disgusting. It's the equivalent of wine coolers or Boones Strawberry Hill for smokers.

9. No kidding, if their pot tastes that bad they need to find a better dealer.
Or fight for legalization so the good tasting pot will be more available.

8. Are these the same as cigarette papers? I never heard the name before.
Come on, don't gt mad. I'm old! I remember when my dad used to use a little machine to roll cigarettes, and the regular brands weren't even that expensive back then!

11. The ones I have bought (and I didn't use them pot but my friends did)
Were basically flavored wrapped cigars that there took the tobacco out of and refilled with pot.
