Periodicals with Substance
Hiya guys...
I'm not sure if this is the right thread for it. But I'm looking for Periodicals that would be good investments. I invested in The Nation, The Atlantic (I know, not always dependable---I just like Kaplan's writings), and The Economist. Are there any other periodicals I should look into? Like Vanity Fair or The New Yorker or any others?

Plus, does anyone know any worthy French (full on French) based periodicals?

1. Mother Jones - Excellent, well-researched articles.
I've given it as a Christmas gift to a couple of my relatives who thought they were moderate conservatives. After reading some of the articles in it, and checking out the information, they know more about some of the issues than they ever did before.

One's now a left-leaning moderate and the other's a liberal.

10. Nice, will definitely get on top of that.
I'm trying to get as many as possible for my own reading and keeping on top of what's going on in the world.

21. Ditto. Lewis Lapham was, for years, my very favorite essayist.
Harpers never disappoints.

3. The New Yorker has set the literary standard for years.
I have read it for decades. I don't read the fiction or poetry, because I don't like it. They have many non-fiction articles that are soon to be published book excerpts.

They also review Broadway shows, movies, art exhibits, dance recitals and books.

They are considered moderate liberals in their political slant. Seymour Hersh has reported on political and military scandals for several decades, and he writes exclusively for The New Yorker.

I subscribe to The New Yorker and Parabola (a wide ranging survey of myth and tradition in many different cultures).

8. Thanks for the two subscriptions you offered.
My sister was reading over my shoulder while I was viewing Parabola and loved the article titles. I'll definitely be investing in both.

4. The New Yorker would be #1 on my list - everything else in the distance...
Vanity Fair has Wolcott, who may be the finest short-length writer currently living. Esquire has Pierce, who wrote the finest article of silly season: http://www.esquire.com/features/barack-obama-0608

Mother Jones is always good.

5. Arts and Letters Daily.com usually has a selection of really good articles from a variety
of sources. Also links to all the periodicals you mentioned.

Try the economist too. I often find their in debth coverage of certain topics like "the middle class" or "MBA schools" clarifies something for me in a stunning way.

16. Thanks for this. I just visited the site.
Talk about brilliant. Had I seen that one, I probably wouldn't have subscribed to the others that I did earlier. But this is the best site ever. Thanks again for the rec. They list all the columnists too like Krugman, Chomnsky, and Applebaum and tons of others. Woohoo!! :woohoo:

11. Vanity Fair, for sure .........
I've had a subscription for years, and I still get excited every month when it arrives. It's gotten more and more political lately - the editor HATES Chimpy Fucknuts - but its coverage of the arts and the cultural scene all over the world is just terrific. Some damn fine writers at VF.

I also subscribe to GQ because I like looking at the pictures of pretty men.

And Esquire, which is also getting nice and political, but their food writing is excellent.

Definitely Vanity Fair, though. Check out their website, and see if you like it: http://www.vanityfair.com/
