Saw the documentary "Meeting David Wilson" last year, when the descendant of slaves journeyed to meet a relative with the same name whose ancestors once "owned" his... A heartwarming, sad and moving story, well worth watching. Genealogy can have surprises for all of us... :-)

16. my family in va know the descendants of our ancestors owners.

we all have a brick from the old homestead to remember. they still own the property and every year at reunion time they offer a tour and we get to see where our ancestors were. i have a brick it keeps me grounded.

I admire your attitude. It meant so much to the first David Wilson to learn his story, too, and the David Wilson he met, who still lives on the grounds where the homestead once stood, invited David's entire family for a reunion, too. That was too moving for words... ;(

I do think it's important for all of us to know where we came from, no matter how painful the story. Most of us have stories of hardship in our family history, granted, not as horrific as the abomination of slavery, but still heartbreaking. None of them had an easy time getting here. :-(

That is very cool that you all have such a valuable keepsake. It must mean a great deal, wish that I had such a tangible reminder. My family came from Ireland and Poland, so have nothing like that. I have seen places where they lived and worked, those that still exist. But they won't last forever, as your keepsake will, so your family story can be passed down forever... :-)
