In an unprecedented moment in recorded history, the Red River in Fargo this morning eclipsed the mark for its largest crest.

The Red River read 40.15 feet at 2:15 a.m., topping the previous mark of 40.1 feet set in 1897.

Floodwaters forced residents to flee to higher ground Thursday in Fargo, Moorhead and the surrounding area, as forecasters warned that the Red River could reach a record 43 feet by Saturday.

The river passed the 1997 flood crest of 39.57 feet just after 7 p.m. Thursday.

Area near Lindenwood Park has evacuation orders at 2 AM. Dike leaking, NOT broken and water rushing in, but precautionary since is leaking and endangering dike.

The Fargo Police Department issued a mandatory evacuation of all residences east of Fourth Street South between South River Road and Lindenwood Drive at 2:09 this morning. There has been a flood protection breech at Linden Avenue, east of Fourth Street South. The neighborhood is just north of Lindenwood Park, a few blocks south of the city's water plant.

Due to the immediate threat of rising flood water, the City of Fargo is ordering a mandatory evacuation. Lt. Todd Dahle said there is a significant leak in the levee there, prompting the evacuation. There are about 150 homes in the area, which is within a levee between the river and a contingency dike.

Dahle said the breach is endangering the dike, and the evacuation is precautionary. "It's not like a 41 foot wall of water rushing through," said Dahle, adding the neighborhood had been asked earlier to voluntarily evacuate.

1. That's terrible. They've worked so hard there.
The weather just hasn't cooperated. The warm up last week hurt a lot... then rain and snow... this sucks for them. I remember '97 (1997, not 1897). That was bad.

2. So scary--I hope everyone who needs to evacuate has already done so. May they be safe. nt
