About Dietgirl
Who goes there?
I'm Shauna Reid, a Scotland-dwelling Australian lass.
My adventures began in Canberra in January 2001, weighing in at 351 pounds (almost 160 kilos). Six years later, on the other side of the planet, I'd lost half my body weight.
I've blogged about my ups and downs since day one and continue to write now that I'm in maintenance mode.
I've also written a book - The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl is out now! Read more about the book here.
How did you get started?
Back in 2001, a family block of chocolate was an afternoon snack. I couldn't walk to the end of the street without feeling like my lungs would explode. I was reclusive and struggling with depression. I'd outgrown the largest clothes in the Fat Shops.
For years I'd told myself that I was doing okay. Life looked great on the surface - I had a good job and wonderful friends. Part of me was waiting for a grand epiphany where angels would sing and clouds would part and I'd declare, This time I'll do something about my weight!
But it didn't happen like that. Slowly I began to see how I was letting my weight dictate everything I did with my life, or rather what I didn't do. It was just a quiet realisation that I couldn't go on this way any longer. I had to try and turn things around.

These were taken at my 21st birthday party in Australia, November 1998.
Left and Right: November 1998 - many kilos, size 24 (US 22)
For some the photos may have been a signal to put down the chocolate, but I continued my unhealthy ways for another two years.
March 2002 and August 2003
Behold, a neck!
The left is about 114 kilos, the right about 98 kilos. At the time I was crushed that I'd only lost 16 kilos in that 17-month stretch. But of that time, there was a six-month+ period where I had a severe bout of depression, completely fell off the wagon, rediscovered Cadbury's and regained almost twenty kilos.
Below it's August 2006, sadly without the benefit of a professional photographer and hair/make-up artist! That mysterious blue growth extending from my thigh is Valentino, my beloved bike.
I was down another five kilos (11lb) down and feeling fab. I later decided that I was happy with this size, and that's where I've been ever since.
