'Bisexual' teacher invites students to same-sex ceremony
Charlie Butts and Marty Cooper - OneNewsNow - 3/26/2009 7:00:00 AM

A self-proclaimed bisexual male teacher in New York has invited his seventh-grade students and their parents to witness his commitment ceremony to another man.

The New York Times reports 32-year-old Chance Nalley gave slips of paper to his entire seventh-grade class at Columbia Secondary School, inviting them to the upcoming ceremony to be held at St. Paul's Chapel on the campus of Columbia University on April 4. Nalley teaches math, science, and engineering at the school -- "whose mission statement includes a commitment to diversity," notes the Times. Nalley reportedly obtained his principal's support before coming out to his students in the fall of 2007, when the school opened.

Frank Russo of the American Family Association of New York calls the Times' report biased. "If a secularist teacher in a school invited his or her students over to a ritual of initiation into becoming a Christian and invited his students to attend this, I could just imagine the hullabaloo that you'd see," he contends, "and The New York Times would not report it in the same fashion as it reported this."

Russo admits he struggles to understand Nalley's motives behind the invitations. "For a teacher to invite his students -- seventh graders, typically 12-years-old, possibly 13 -- to attend a gay marriage is mind-boggling to me that he would do that."

The family advocate is also encouraging parents not to take their children to a ceremony that he believes "honors" a gender identity disorder.

The Times article showed Nalley's students were trying to understand his sexuality. When asked if they were surprised he was "gay," a handful of students noted he was bisexual, not gay. One student added that his coming out to them "showed he trusts us."

Interestingly enough, Nalley says six of his students have "come out" to him this year.

1. Frank Russo is an asshole, oh, and the motive is obvious, Nalley wants to share...
his happiness with his students, what is wrong with that?

5. Is that really the name of the first writer of this article?
Oh, dear.

But, why shouldn't the kids be invited?

Excellent. Just joyously excellent!

6. Yeah, it's always offensive when a teacher invites his students to his wedding.

7. Aaaah for the good old days, when kids didn't even know if their teachers
were single or married, and did not care:).. I don't think I ever even knew their first names :)..or if they had kids..

We knew what kind of car they drove( because we saw them arrive at school), and what subject they taught..but that was about it :)

Familiarity is the problem here.. There needs to be a barrier between student-teacher...just as there is in ANY situation.

Parents should not make their children into their "friends, confidantes, buddies" either.

As a parent, I would feel uncomfortable with a teacher who invited my kid to ANY personal/outside event in their lives.. a wedding, a funeral, a birthday party, etc.. (unless we were related to that teacher or they were a personal friend of the family).

8. I agree completely. I don't recall knowing much of anything about most
teachers that I had. They're authority figures, not "pals".

9. I agree -- I would be very put off if my kids' teachers invited them to weddings.
And I am a huge fan of my kids' teachers.

11. I would not be surprised if this happened in tiny towns like mine, though. Everyone knows
everyone outside of school so I guess it's a bit of a different situation.

12. Interesting -- I also live in a very small town. I could see a teacher inviting kids of parents
he/she knows anyway, but not the whole class. Depends on the school/town, I guess.

14. Some of our grades have as few as 3 kids, so it would be easy enough to invite all of them
LOL

But yeah, it would be about the kids who are related or kids of parents who are friends etc etc

23. I am inclined to agree, but I see one subtle difference.
The children may not have an opportunity to experience a same sex committment ceremony in their own families so in a small way, it has a bit of educational value.

In the end, though, I side with you. It is an event for friends and family. I wouldn't have invited my students, but if my child wished to attend, I would take him.

10. The comparison he makes is bogus....
they should make the comparison to a religious wedding ceremony at a Jewish temple or Catholic Church or somewhere else. The religious indoctrination ceremony is a stupid comparison!

I don't know why a teacher would invite his or her students to the wedding. My husband and I didn't want his students at ours, that's for sure. But... I also don't get why people are up in arms about this. It's not like anybody is forcing anyone to go. It's a nice gesture, though one I find sort of insane as an ex-teacher myself.

20. Maybe they're having a casual celebration....
buffet somewhere, and adding 30 people won't be a huge expense. I just don't get the wanting your current students there! Most teachers are excited to be finished with them for the school year and aren't asking for them to be at social functions! But that was a silly observation from me. I'm sure not all teachers feel that way. Obviously this one didn't.

I have no idea why anybody is up in arms about this, though.

24. Why are they up in arms?
Because six, count 'em, six students have come out to him this year alone!

Obviously, the sinister recruitment tactics are working as Anita Bryant warned us they would!

AAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
