Car folks: Is it not possible for GM and Chrysler to restructure themselves
as smaller companies in terms of the amount of car sales needed to provide sustainability? When the economy turns around if people buy cars at the rate we are now with the economy down it would produce some nice overall savings for the North American people. This is money that of course could be saved, our rate of savings is very low right now, or invested in green technology.

Could they be set up to work with current sales levels? Keeping them and saving the North American people money.

1. They are trying to unload some brands.
Anyone in the market to buy Saturn?

GM is reducing its line-up. Less lines, less cars made.

2. economies of scale make 'small' and 'car company'
not a good combination unless you are selling very expensive cars. To compete against the asian giants, Ford Chrysler and GM also have to be giants.

That said we could of course subsidize our domestic car manufacturers to keep them in business, but that would violate one of the many commandments of neo liberal fundamentalism, plus various ensnaring treaties we are signed onto, so it would be difficult.

3. Taking GM, etc. Off the Hook for Health Care Wouldn't Be Considered a Subsidy
since all our trading partners already do that.

4. Well yes indeed, but that isn't going to happen.
Instead we will get some minimal reform of the existing awful failed system. Too bad.
