The snow is starting to turn grayish, the air smells a little sulphury and leaves a gritty film in the mouth.

6. Yummy. I remember going through that with St. Helens in 1980.
Try not to run your windshield wipers (or the rest of your car) if you can. That's stuff's hell on glass (and the rest of your car).
