HOW RICH ARE YOU?

Every year we gaze enviously at the lists of the richest people in the world.

Wondering what it would be like to have that sort of cash. But where would you sit on one of those lists?

Here's your chance to find out.

5. This only tells me where I am based SOLELY on my pay.
Not based upon my cost of living in different parts of the world.

That's like saying someone living on $ 7000.00 per annum will live as 'lavishly' in New York as in Arkansas.

There is an actual reason, other than change of scenery, that many Americans opt to retire outside the US.

8. Hmmm - something I haven't really considered - retiring to another country
.
.
.

Might be worth considering

A warmer climate, some country that can use my mechanical and carpentry skills just for a hobby and extra income/bartering power,

cuz I KNOW there are lots of poorly developed nations where an income of over 7 grand a year would make me a "rich" person

And I don't have to remain in Canada to collect it . . .

hmmmmm - something for me to seriously ponder .

12. After going to Nepal I thought very seriously I might retire there.
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 10:31 AM by NoSheep
The only big issue I can see would be a lack of reasonable health care...oh...wait a minute! That's it. I'm retiring in Nepal.

14. I'm kind of wondering if some of those places actually exist
outside of some war-torn 3-rd world banana republic.

My g/f and I have been looking for an inexpensive tropical paradise to retire, but so far the places we've looked in the Caribbean have housing costs that make southern cali look look like a bargain.

10. Exactly. This came to mind...My mother's1st house was $7,000.
My first house was $159,000. Her house was twice the size of mine too!

I assure you I do not make 22 times more money than she and my father did back then. The logical fallacy of this site's calculator can be seen right here in our own country.

I know I am much more well off than most of the peole in the world, but I will not be lumped in with the "richest"...not while they're still getting rich off the sweat from my back.

6. The problem with this chart is that it does not adjust for cost of living
Our incomes (and I'm poverty line) may go a long ways somewhere else, but not here. However, even being poor (for the USA), I'm still relatively comfortable. The dgree of poverty for some in this world is staggering, and is a crime against humanity.

18. Not a huge adjustment
The cost of living in poor countries may be less, but not by orders of magnitude. If you go to a third world country and want running water and sewage lines to your house, it is still going to cost you a few hundred dollars a month in rent (or house payment). Food in the U.S. is high because of all the transportation involved, but seldom is it 10 times what the similar item is in a poor country.

But when you consider that the minimum wage in the U.S. is over $50 a day, that IS more than an order of magnitude for the people who are living on less than $3 a day.

9. Pretty cool (and sad) tool however...
if they asked you for your country and divided by PPP it would be more accurate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purchasing_power_parity

PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) is a method that lets you compared "buying power" of $1 in various countries.

A country w/ PPP of say 0.2 indicates that $1 buys 5x the goods that $1 buys in US. So someone making $10,000 in US would have a "$50,000 lifestyle" living in a country w/ PPP of 0.2.

On the other hand a country w/ PPP of >1 a $1 doesn't go as far. So someone with a PPP of $10K in a country like Bermuda (w/ PPP of 1.54) is living a "$6,000 lifestyle).

Hopefully the world never decides we should share the wealth.

There are supposedly only 44,662,750 people in the entire world who have a higher income than me?! Those numbers just don't sound right.

13. Our economy has been pumped up to create wealth for some people.
The home we bought for $50,000 was under $10,000 40 years ago, and probably around $2000 when it was built around 1920. We are two people, but have 9 rooms, 2 complete bathrooms, clean reliable water, all the electricity we want to pay for, even an enclosed yard to grow plants and vegies aon off street parking for our 2 cars.
Neither of us works - my wife is disabled for over 10 years, and I retired nearly 2 years ago and we live on disablity and a small pension, not even social security till late summer.
We are relatively free and relatively safe.
Most people in the world can not even hope to live as well as we do.

Our pets get more medical care and food than many humans do.
We are still considered low income here.

17. Except with $7000 a year in the West...
Its likely you will be mal-nourished. If you weren't Canadian, your family could be suseptible to death from treatable diseases (the US has a high treatable disease mortality rate).

If you made that, in another country, where nice homes are less that $5K a piece, its possible you can be more comfortable and have more relative wealth.

Finite measurements of wealth, that do not take into account the local cost of living and standard of living are a bit useless.

20. The point of this site is to encourage you to donate
To help the poor in third world countries. They are showing mid income Americans and Europeans that they are quite wealthy compared to others in the world nd that a little bit of it could go a long way elsewhere.

.76% if I include my husband's income. Of course that is not how we would rank if just compared to US incomes.
