Perhaps Obama knows where Bin Laden is and that's what the Afghan surge is all about
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 10:55 AM by eeyore
Personally, I've thought that Bin Laden has been dead for years. But it just occurred to me that this could be Obama acting on intelligence, and he's out to do what Georgie failed to do - capture the guy who (allegedly) masterminded 9/11.

Can you imaging the exploding freeper heads if our military captures Bin Laden on Obama's orders, and are able to bring him back for a fair and legal trial? Obama wouldn't dare send him to Gitmo, so where would he go? What sort of trial would he get? Obama would surely want him brought in alive.

This scenario would make Bush look like a fucking idiot, and would be some of the best revenge imaginable. Democrats getting done what the tough talking "uber-patriot" war president couldn't, showing the post 9/11 policy of Bush to be the farce and crime that it was.

Delicious!

6. There are a lot of people who'd like some revenge on Bush
I have a hard time believing that, if OBL is alive, we don't know exactly where to find him. Can't be that hard. I think Bush decided not to pursue him on purpose.

7. Yup. Going after Iraq and having his own personal wargasm...
The past is the past; we need to repair... and refocus.

I still can't believe * was re-elected in 2004, especially with his comment about how Osama no longer interested him. Just !^@%#$ asinine and disrespectful of Bush to do...

Dead or alive, let's focus on getting Bin Laden, and get things completed. Thumbs up to President Obama on this. :)

8. The last supposed tape from him was Jan 14th
CAIRO, Egypt — Osama bin Laden urged Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel, seeking to harness anger over the Gaza offensive with a new message posted on the Internet on Wednesday.

The al-Qaida chief vowed to open "new fronts" against the U.S. and its allies beyond Iraq and Afghanistan and also criticized Arab leaders, accusing most of them of being allies of the U.S. and Israel.

The White House dismissed the call to jihad, saying it reflects bin Laden's isolation and shows he is trying to remain relevant at a time when his ideology and mission are being challenged.

Bin Laden spoke in a 22-minute audiotape posted on Islamic militant Web sites where al-Qaida usually issues its messages. The 51-year-old al-Qaida leader has been in hiding since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, believed to be living somewhere along the lawless Pakistan-Afghan border.

Detainees Say They Planned Sept. 11
The five detainees at Guantánamo Bay charged with planning the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks have filed a document with the military commission at the United States naval base there expressing pride at their accomplishment and accepting full responsibility for the killing of nearly 3,000 people.

The document, which may be released publicly on Tuesday, uses the Arabic term for a consultative assembly in describing the five men as the “9/11 Shura Council,” and it says their actions were an offering to God, according to excerpts of the document that were read to a reporter by a government official who was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The document is titled “The Islamic Response to the Government’s Nine Accusations,” the military judge at the Guantánamo Bay detention camp said in a separate filing, obtained by The New York Times, that describes the detainees’ document.

The document was filed on behalf of the five men, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who has described himself as the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks.

to every US President for at least 50 years, except of course they killed FAR FAR FAR more people and their culpability is beyond question.

I see little point in capturing and/or killing Bin Laden but to kill thousands of Afghan men, women and children to do so is frankly morally repugnant.

If someone killed a few folk and then went into hiding in your neighbourhood (wasn't invited mind) how many of your friends and family would you be OK with sacrificing to see the evil doer caught?

Or it it somehow different? if so why?

23. One way or the other, I hope Obama ends this chapter.
Personally, I think he died in 2001, sometime during/after the bombing of Bora-Bora. But keeping the myth of OBL alive was important to the Bush-Cheney administration as the face of terrorism in order to keep their WOT/Iraq adventure going. IMHO, it will be even more devastating to the Bush legacy if Obama releases conclusive evidence that Osama died from renal failure or complications resulting from the bombings in in late 2001.

25. Very good point.
I agree, either way this mystery will likely be solved, and either outcome isn't good for the Bush legacy. However, proof that he kept that bogeyman alive would dissolve any doubt that the entire Bush presidency was a ruse played out with our military at risk.

The point being that a boogie man was built up for us all to focus on and hate when the real culprit that engenders extremism is poverty and oppression. And guess which side our corporate-state government is on in this real battle?

Find and fix the cause, don't just hang the scapegoat publicly and think it's over and won.
