Been gone for 6 months from DU...my question is
what does it mean to a capitalist society when there are corporations 'to big to fail'? Is that right? Can't fail?

1. It means that they have managed to privatize the profits and socialize the losses.
Socialism for corporations and the rich, not so much for the rest of us.

We need to be forcing these too large companies to break up. It's the least that should happen when we own 80% of the company.

Regards

2. The serfs eat shit while paying for the aristocracies wealthy parties.
Whatever happen to ant-trust laws? Wouldn't they apply to a company 'to big' to fail? I guess 8 years of the Chimperor was too much for our way of life. :(

4. Apparently, anti-trust hasn't really been enforced since Reagan.
Someone needs to dust that law off and actually actively enforce it.

3. market tyranny
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 03:33 PM by seemslikeadream
The global economy has become like a malignant cancer, advancing the colonization of the planet's living spaces for the benefit of powerful corporations and financial institutions. It has turned these once useful institutions into instruments of a market tyranny that is destroying livelihoods, displacing people, and feeding on life in an insatiable quest for money. It forces us all to act in ways destructive of ourselves, our families, our communities, and nature. This destructive process is driven by a combination of institutional forces and an extremist ideology of corporate libertarianism that invokes the theories of Adam Smith and market economics to advance policies that systematically undermine both the market and democracy.

11. It means we needed more regulation in the 90s than we realized, a lesson we should have
learned well enough from the implosion of Long Term Capital Management. Indeed, Greenspan himself knew the writing was on the wall.

that if they failed our government and society would have to change in a way that would no longer benefit the elite in the same way it does today?

29. It will take some time to see how Obama as President sorts out...
So far...it's still infighting..amongst Dems and Missiles launched from ther RW...plus the "Shadow Govt." and the rest.

I'd give it another 6 months to see how it sorts out before "dipping toe in water" if you had to "cool out" for 6 months before.

Why aggrivate yourself..if you can just wait it out?
