Poll question: Do you still bank with Citibank or Bank of America?
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 05:16 PM by burythehatchet
...as your primary checking or savings account...

Have you or have you considered moving your banking relationship to a local, community bank or credit union?

Please let me know if you have an "other" and I will try to edit the poll if time permits.

I have been using a credit union for about 30 years for everything else.

4. Stuck with their credit card until I can ever afford to pay it off.
I suppose I'll end up banking with them when Citibank buys up Wachovia and we don't have to make those silly consumer choices about banks any more.

because they did not go to Vegas.

8. We ended up at BoA by accident
When we first moved to Boston in the late 90s we opened an account with what I believe at that time was called Bank Boston. In the merger mania of those years it was swallowed up by Fleet Bank. We thought of moving our account but didn't get around to it before Fleet Bank was, in turn, swallowed up by Bank of America. How did we get here, we wondered.

So then we moved to Chicago, and it was just easiest to retain our same account with BoA, but we were never very happy about it. Not that we've ever had any problems with BoA. Au contraire: it was just the idea of this mega-corporation. But we're still there as we contemplate changing. But to where? We'll figure it out when all the dust settles.

11. CRedit union, if you have the option, or a community bank
Many local banks are doing just fine, and they help your community.

9. I don't personally have any accounts with either, but a business I'm involved in banks with BoA.
I don't like them, and I never have.

I used to bank with C&S when I lived in Atlanta and Ft. Lauderdale, and I loved them until they were bought out and became Nations Bank. Then Nations Bank became BoA. Both were horrible. C&S was a far superior bank in so many ways.

12. I have a BofA credit card but it didn't start out that way
I had an MBNA MasterCard for years, and then BA bought them. It's the only cc we have and I'm looking forward to paying it off in the near future. I think we should have one active cc for emergencies, and I'd like to shift to another one, but I can't think of any other cc that I'd really want to move to yet.

17. Just paid off my MBNA/BA card
Chase offered me 4% for 2 years so I transferred it to Chase. I was never late once with MBNA yet they hiked my interest rate up to 19.99%. To hell with Bank of America.

19. Changed from BA last year, finally fed up with them
They were putting 10 day "holds" on any check of $5,000 or more regardless of whether it was a bank check, certified check or whatever. As a lawyer they made it impossible for me to conduct real estate closings which require that checks be written off mortgage funds (always bank checks or wires) the next day. Switched to Commerce Bank but before I could blink an eye it was bought by TD Bank.

13. I had finally had it up to here last May with BoA
And their ridiculous fees, holding credit card payments (ones done electronically mind you, NOT sent via surface mail), etc. I could go on and on. I finally wised up, canceleed my BoA Visa card (still paying it off however) and now use local bank for checking/savings/debit card. Nice friendly people. Always a HUMAN voice when you call them (and not in Bangladore either, but 4 blocks from my office). It's been a wonderful experience. I will never go back to mega-corp bank again ever.

15. About four years ago CitiBank bought out CalFed
I pulled my account and went to another local bank. By the way CalFed had bought out my previous bank.

As for credit cards, I started off with three different banks ( a deliberate choice on my part), all of which have now been bought out by B of A. CitiBank canceled my credit card with them for lack of use.

Fuck 'em all.

20. I left BOA after a couple months with them and seeing how they basically just
steal money out of accounts with hidden fees. That was years ago. Unfortunately Countrywide is with them now and I am back with them because of that. I would never bank with them again though.

24. Some of us ended up with them without choice. I never had a
problem with MBNA and was switched to B of A. I have a balance that I am paying off now and when it is zero, I will drop them. Now that I am laid off and a widow, I have few options to apply for a new card. I have, however, changed my checking and savings accts to a small local bank that is sound. Maybe I should speak to them about a card with a low credit limit. I am still paying off my late husbands Chase card. I will be glad to see these 2 balances go away. We were never big spenders but my problem is due to the fact that we took a trip to Europe last May with one of our kids. The credit card charges were still coming in after my husband died of a stroke in June.
Two months later I was laid off.

Sometimes your best plans don't go right. We had planned to pay off the trip during the course of the following few months.

27. I am still with Bank of America and do not plan
to go to another bank. One reason is that I am in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy and would not be able to get an account with any other bank because of my credit. I have been through that in the past.

34. OTHER: We had 6 credit cards with Citi-have 2 left with a total balance
under $600, will be completely paid in a few months. Our last credit cards not related to our credit union accounts.
We have one small checking account with a bank we use for bill paying, but have our main accounts with a credit union for over 15 years.

37. We thought it over carefully....
We use BofA for all our bill paying. I figure that costs them something because they mail out checks for most of the bills I pay. We get a free safe-deposit box. We get a no-fee debit card. We get a no-fee credit card that we use as a backstop for our debit account, in case we screw up and bounce a check. BofA automatically puts any insufficient-funds debit or check onto that account. No charge. We have pension and SS checks sent directly to our BofA account.

We keep the rest of our money in a credit union, and I move money back and forth as needed.

We figure we COST BofA money.

Therefore, we'll stick with them.

My emotions - and Ms Bigmack's - tell us to pull our money, but our heads keep us with BofA.
