Fareed Zakaria Showing His CFR Stripes

I used to like the guy, I thought. Then I heard he was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, but I forgave him for that just a little bit. A slight piece of mud on his face. Okay. It's a different world. But today was the last straw. The piece of mud was actually a zit and it popped big and slimy on my mind's mental image of the man.

Fareed was interviewing Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his CNN Sunday news show. Asked him why he has not yet destroyed Venezuela president Chavez (maybe not in those terms, but spirit, yeah boy!). It was a heck of a jab, and he put the Brazilian pres on the spot.

But it was how he did it. He did it like the press and Repubs did it to get us ready for war, and to support the war.

Back in the day, about 2004-2008, there was always this knee-jerk reaction to criticizing war and criticizing the Bush govt. "I think the war is wrong." KJR: That means you hate the troops.

"I think Bush is wrong." KJR: Oh, so now you hate our form of government."

And this is how they argued for 8 years. Everyone who has read a book knows this is a logical fallacy and used for argumentation in dumb quarters (i.e. MSN). BUT, today I saw ol' Fareed use the same goddam device.

Talking to the Brazilian Pres, he asks, how can you support Chavez who has called the American president "Satan" -- and thereby Fareed implies that Chavez has cast aspersions on the very idea of Democracy. He made Chavez to be some kind of despot fomenting communism, as anti-democratic, as arch-enemy! Fareed's CFR boys must have been so proud of their ethnic member. Fox News could not have set up a better question, which has nothing to do with the answer, but to fabricate discord between Chavez and da Silva. Da Silva's answer put Fareed's intent to shame. God Bless da Silva. He has a mind of his own. If I were him, afterwards I would have had Fareed whipped for even asking such a question in that way, but hey, that's just me.

Chavez criticized Bush as Satan at the UN years ago, and for my money Bush is still the best candidate for that honor on the world stage. Chavez was not criticizing democracy or the presidency per se. YET good ol' two-faced Fareed makes that link. Chavez hates Bush (Satan) = Chavez hates U.S., Democracy, the institution of the Presidency. All of that is implied by his question to da Silva. All of that is designed to further alienate and demonize Chavez. That is the CFR position, which is anything but reason-based (i.e. justice oriented).

Had their been some degree of objectivity from Fareed, like the fact that Chavez survived an attempted US-led coup in 2002, and thus serves as a reason Chavez does not trust us (i.e. U.S.)?? -- but noooooo. Too far back, too far back in the day, doesn't count as a critical historic detail in which to couch the context. (cf. Perkins' Economic Hitman)?

Fareed as a sneaky little buttwipe for the CFR, with support from CNN: hurts me to say that. But this order of selectivity is the basis for rewriting history. Sorry Fareed. Even Jon Stewart will be disappointed at this one.

Being a Sunday, let us all wish great success upon the Spanish judge and his prosecutors in their quest to expose the bloody scab of Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and the culture of torture that gripped our America. If that story ever surfaces, then Fareed might see himself forced to agree a bit with Chavez's name-calling -- if only for the sake of ratings... (sigh)
