Hersh: Cheney left a 'stay behind'; still has power

On Fresh Air ( http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102495389 ) yesterday veteran investigative journalist Sy Hersh made some very chilling observations. He was discussing why it is that many of the people who had told him to get back in touch with them in February, to get the real scoop on Bush-Cheney, still won't talk...

SNIP

...Hersh believes that Cheney still has key people in multiple agencies -- especially military and intelligence of course -- who keep him informed at a detailed level. He calls this a "stay behind", an intelligence term for moles left in-country, to conduct sabotage or other operations in the interests of an expelled force.

He suggests that the extent of this network is such that Cheney has some lingering ability to interfere with the new administration, to influence the execution of policies, and to intimidate his potential critics still in government.

He notes that Cheney is easy to caricature and underestimate, but is very smart and a formidable manipulator, "the real deal" as he put it at one point. I got the feeling that Hersh was choosing his words carefully on one level to be reasonably clear and to quite frankly alarm people, without getting too inflammatory (as he has sometimes done and later regretted). I also noticed that he did toss in the word 'sabotage...'

29. I think so.
If the media knows about it, the government certainly does.

6. As should anyone informing for him!!!
Obama is now Commander in Chief and anyone currently providing sensitive information to Cheney that he is no longer entitled to receive should be held accountable, as well.

5. Cheney would have made a good CIA bureau chief, it seems.
Here is a free book if anyone is interested in CIA stay behind missions in Europe during the Cold War.

23. Cheney's new office is right next door.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4981948

"His office is in a non-descript suburban office building in McLean, Va., in a suite that could just as easily house a dental clinic. The office is across the hall from a quick-copy store. The door is marked by nothing except a paper sign, held up by tape, saying the unit is occupied by the General Services Administration."

9. Hes writing a book and I think this is hype for it.
Not to say his conclusions are without merit, but I do believe he is tricking information to the media in order to build anticipation for his next piece of literature.

12. his job is to sell his words and stories-fear basically.
whether what he writes is true or not it is important to remember that it has never stopped him in the past. If even HALF of the things he has written were ever true, don't you think more people would be behind bars or held accountable? I put this guy right in there with Tom Clancy. He sells fear trying to pass it off as reality.

32. It's exactly what Bush Sr. did during the Carter administration
Bush Sr. had been CIA director under Jerry Ford. When Carter was elected, Bush was replaced -- but a whole slew of CIA and former CIA officers remained loyal to him and were actively trying to undermine Carter. They were highly successful at it, too.

Scott Ritter and several others were quite vocal about it. I strongly believe their leaking caused sufficient backlash to stop it.

And I don't think he moved into a new home that is only 2,000 feet away from the CIA headquarters just for the view. It was for the convenience.

20. Didn't the fictitious tv show "24" do a Cheney-lite episode last night?
They have a segment going where a private company, a contractor for the US DoD, has their own private army, weapons, geographic proximity to the WH, has already assisted terrorists, and now possesses a biological weapon. Supposedly, the US government can't do much about it because of posse comitatus.

Cheney is the ultimate insider. Anyone who is talking to him on the QT should be charged with some sort of treason for passing information to a man who has a vested interest in one of those private DoD-contracted companies.

26. What's unfortunate is that many of these Evil Players believe "24" is true to life.
In the end, it will be ARROGANCE and DELUSIONS that destroy them. However, like true right wing fanatics it will always be someone else's fault.

The show is pretty good sometimes. This bit about the DoD contractor (like Blackwood Security) being run by a traitor is pretty damn good. It reflects the dangers of privatizing military business.

37. I don't think it's just Cheney
The agencies are packed top to bottom with right-wing Christians, Federalist Society members, GOP ideologues, Young Republicans, you name it.

It would take a purge of Stalinist proportions to get the Cheney/Rove/Bush cancer out of the government.

38. Does anybody remember the Monica Goodling testimony where she was asked
if she took a loyalty oath to Bush that trumped her oath to uphold the Constitution, and she took the fifth?

I think it was Sheldon Whitehouse who asked her the question. I wonder if I can find it. I've wondered and worried about those who've taken loyalty oaths to Bush or Cheney since the election.
