Kyl: Dems have 'no right' to demand Republican budget
@ 4:31 pm by Michael O'Brien

Democrats have "no right" to ask Republicans to produce an alternative budget, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate said Tuesday.

"I have a different view than some of my colleagues, and I know that {Senate Minority Leader Mitch} McConnell (R-Ky.) has the same view that I do, and that is that producing a budget is the responsibility of the party in power," Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) told the conservative website Human Events. "And they have no right to ask the defeated party to produce a budget."

Kyl rejected the risk of the GOP being tarred as the "Party of 'No'" over refusing to offer a budget alternative, reasoning that providing a budget only fuels partisanship in the Senate.

"If you insist that we provide an alternative budget, you’re right back in to the partisan politics of Democrat versus Republican, us versus them, our product versus their product which people are tired of," Kyl explained.

The Arizona Republican reasoned that it would be a more productive use of his party's time to offer amendments to the Democratic budget, since their budget would likely be dismissed out-of-hand anyway. Kyl said their amendments would look to shape healthcare, energy, education loans, and taxes.

3. This was great framing by President Obama
I think that Kyl is right in the sense that traditionally the process has been to have the party in power write the budget and the minority to spend time tweaking it.

But the administration did a great job of sidestepping that idea and placing a bar higher than the republicans are willing to reach.

4. Kyl is absolutely right
But in the little game that's being played here, it's perfectly legitimate to ask the folks who are whining about the budget that's been debated should proffer their own suggestions if they don't like what's on the table. Call it the Put-Up-or-Shut-Up Doctrine.

You don't have a budget of your own, Sen. Kyl? Then go sit in the corner and pout. The grown-ups are trying to get something done here.

6. In that case, they have no right to criticize Obama's budget.
Are they high? It's quite simple. You must show your proofs in order to be in a debate. They show nothing, therefore they cannot be in the debate.
