1. I started a thread about her this morning
It sank like a stone. She was loved by may of us in the Caribbean.
She fought for women's rights big time.

3. Gotcha.
I did 2 this weekend, one at feminists, one up front. I've been interested since seeing a movie some years ago. I also wrote to her niece (?) who did a movie about her years ago.

6. She was the first American lead a Commonwealth Country
which is an amazing story in and of itself - particularly since she was a hardcore leftist.
I saw her the last time she was in Jamaica - in the 90s.

2. Fascinating woman.
Fascinating life. They did a nice piece on her on BBC's The World yesterday. Somehow I'd never managed to learn about her before.

4. Her husband Cheddi won the elections in 1953
and his platform was hardly different from the British Labour Party's. The Brits invaded Guyana, threw Cheddi in prison and placed her on house arrest.
By the 60s the Americans got involved and they changed the political system to an Executive Presidency to keep him from winning. That was the end of democracy in Guyana.

Lots of great stuff in the Stabroek News today.

See if you can find Cheddi's book :The West on Trial - a classic.
